The project is a Centre of Excellence for “Research and development of Ultra Low Head (ULH) and Hydrokinetic Turbines and performance prediction of small hydro turbine model/projects”. The ad is No. HRED/R-298/878.
About the hydrokinetic turbine posts at IIT Roorkee
- Project Fellow (CFD guidelines): CFD of Francis and reversible pump turbines, and standard procedures for CFD and model testing
- Project Fellow (screw and other low head turbines): lab and field tests of ultra low head and screw turbines
- Project Fellow or Research Associate (potential assessment): study canals, rivers, outfalls and dam toes for ULH and hydrokinetic sites, with site visits
- Research Associate (mechanical design): design, build and test model and prototype hydrokinetic turbines, with FEM of parts under hydrodynamic loads
Why this role matters
India has thousands of canal falls and river stretches with little head. Ultra low head and hydrokinetic turbines can turn them into clean power with no big dam. The pay bands are wide, so experience counts.
Eligibility
- CFD guidelines post: Ph.D. in Mechanical, Civil or Hydropower Engineering with CFD or design work on hydro turbines or pumps; or M.Tech. with three years of such experience
- Low head turbine post: Ph.D. or M.Tech. in Mechanical, Hydropower, Aeronautical or Civil Engineering, with design (including SolidWorks) and CFD work on hydraulic turbines, rotating machines or aerodynamics
- Potential assessment post: Ph.D. or M.Tech. in Mechanical, Hydropower or Civil Engineering, with experience in assessing renewable energy resources
- Mechanical design post: M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering with experience in composite manufacturing and testing of hydrokinetic turbines
- Indian nationals only
Bring your original certificates to the interview. No TA/DA is paid. SC/ST candidates get preference when qualifications and experience are equal. The ad gives no age limit.
Pay and duration
- Project Fellow: ₹40,000 to ₹1,00,000 a month, plus HRA
- Research Associate: ₹30,000 to ₹75,000 a month, plus HRA
- The ad does not say how the figure within each band is set
- Duration: one year, or up to the project end date
How to apply
Send your application to the Principal Investigator by 2 November 2026, 5 pm. The ad accepts email (arun.kumar@hre.iitr.ac.in), post, or handing it in at the interview. Send an application on plain paper with a detailed CV that lists your degrees in order, your research and industry experience, and attested copies of your degree and experience certificates. Say which of the four posts you want. Read the official advertisement (PDF) first.
Key dates
- Last date to apply: 2 November 2026, 5 pm
- Interview: date to be told to candidates
Please read the official IIT Roorkee advertisement before applying, and browse more Research Associate jobs on ResearchJobs.in.

How to prepare for this application
- Know the turbine types: Archimedes screw, propeller and cross-flow turbines for heads below 3 m, and hydrokinetic rotors for flowing water.
- Show your CFD workflow: meshing, turbulence models and validation of a turbine or pump case in ANSYS CFX or Fluent.
- Revise similarity laws: specific speed, unit quantities and how model tests scale to prototypes (IEC 60193).
- For the potential post: learn how to estimate power from discharge and head data, and where canal falls and dam toes give sites.
- For the design post: bring examples of composite blades you made and tested, and an FEM of a loaded part.
