Why this role matters

One application window covers every IIT Hyderabad department, and it closes later than most IIT calls. M.Tech. holders can apply on several routes without an entrance exam. That makes it a strong option for January.

Eligibility

  • Regular PhD (engineering and most departments): M.E./M.Tech./M.S. (by Research)/integrated Master’s/M.Pharm/MD or MS, or equivalent, with first class. No entrance exam is needed on this route
  • Regular PhD with an M.Sc.: first class plus GATE, CSIR/UGC, DST-INSPIRE, ICMR, NBHM, DBT or equivalent
  • Direct PhD: B.E./B.Tech./B.Des./B.Arch./4-year BS/MCA/M.Sc. or similar from a CFI with 8 CGPA (no exam); or first class plus GATE, CEED, CSIR/UGC, DST-INSPIRE, NBHM, DBT or equivalent
  • Special Direct PhD: B.Tech./4-year BS/5-year MS from IITs, IISc or IISERs (via JEE Advanced or the IISER Aptitude Test), or B.Des. from IITs via UCEED, with 9 CGPA
  • External PhD: a Master’s with first class; Liberal Arts asks for two years of work experience
  • Design, Liberal Arts, Heritage Science, Management and the Greenko School have their own degree rules in the eligibility PDF

The selection cut-off is relaxed by 10% for OBC and 15% for SC/ST candidates. This does not apply to the Special Direct or External routes. A foreign degree needs an equivalence certificate. The scanned eligibility table is hard to read in places, so check your row in the PDF itself.

Pay and duration

  • The admissions page does not state fellowship amounts or fees
  • Check your department’s brochure and the institute fee page before you apply

How to prepare for this application

  • Pick a department first: read its brochure and note two or three faculty whose work fits yours.
  • Check your route: M.Tech. holders often need no exam, but M.Sc. holders need GATE, NET or similar. Know which row applies to you.
  • Prepare for a written test or interview: revise the core GATE syllabus of your branch.
  • Write a short research statement: one page on the problem you want to work on and why.
  • Compare January 2027 options: many IIT calls close in early November. Use our Find a supervisor page to shortlist guides.
