Why this role matters

This call accepts strong B.Tech. graduates from top institutes without GATE. Few IIT schools allow that. It also offers a dual-degree route that starts with a research Master’s.

Eligibility

  • PhD, any one of: B.E./B.Tech. with a valid GATE score; a science Master’s with a valid GATE score; a B.Tech. or science Master’s with two or more years in a reputed R&D organisation and a research record; a B.Tech./B.E./B.S. with CGPA 7.5 from a CFTI, a top-100 NIRF institute or a Himachal Pradesh government institution; or an engineering Master’s
  • M.Tech. (Research) and Dual Degree: B.E./B.Tech. with valid GATE; a science Master’s with valid GATE; or a B.Tech./B.E./B.S. with CGPA 7.5 from a CFTI, a top-100 NIRF institute or a Himachal Pradesh government institution
  • Self-sponsored and part-time applicants do not need GATE, but they get no institute fellowship
  • Part-time applicants must email a guide preference, a research proposal and an employer NOC as one PDF

Only your first preference is processed. Apply separately, with a separate fee, for each discipline or programme. Shortlisted candidates take a written test and/or interview in hybrid mode. No TA/DA is paid.

Pay and duration

  • The brochure gives no fellowship figure
  • Regular full-time scholars may get institute financial assistance as per norms; self-sponsored and part-time scholars do not
  • Sponsored-project fellowships follow the funding agency and last as long as the project

Read the SMME admission brochure (PDF) first. Then apply and pay the fee on the IIT Mandi Samarth admission portal by 5 November 2026, 12 noon. All IIT Mandi calls are listed on the PhD admissions page. For queries, the brochure gives smmeadmissions@iitmandi.ac.in.

How to prepare for this application

  • Choose your discipline carefully: only your first preference counts.
  • Check the GATE rule: B.Tech. holders from CFTIs or top-100 NIRF institutes with CGPA 7.5 can apply without GATE.
  • Revise core subjects: strength of materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and materials science for the test.
  • Read faculty pages: name one or two SMME faculty whose work fits yours in the interview.
  • Plan the trip: the interview is hybrid. If you go in person, book a hostel room early. Use our Find a supervisor page to compare guides.
