Job Description
This postdoc in superconducting qubits at Aalto University does experimental circuit QED in the Kvantti group in Espoo, Finland. Pay starts at about €4,229 a month. Apply by 31 December 2026. Screening is rolling, so apply early.
At a glance
- Position: Postdoctoral researcher, 2-year fixed-term contract to start
- Where: Kvantti group, Department of Applied Physics, Aalto University, Otaniemi, Espoo, Finland
- Group leader: Prof. Sorin Paraoanu
- Pay: About €4,229 a month, up to €4,649 with experience
- Reference: R47444

About the superconducting qubit postdoc
- Do experiments on circuits made of superconducting qubits and resonators
- Work on axion detection with superconducting qubits
- Work on controlling quantum computers with microwave and optical signals
- Work on continuous-variable quantum information and sensing with parametric amplifiers
- Collaborate with industry partners and other academic groups on these projects
The projects are funded by the EU, the Research Council of Finland and Business Finland. You will have full access to the group’s labs and to OtaNano, Finland’s national facility for micro-, nano- and quantum technology. The group sits in the Low Temperature Laboratory.
Why this role matters
Finland has one of Europe’s busiest quantum clusters, with firms like IQM and Bluefors nearby. This post covers qubits, sensing and dark-matter search. It also welcomes optics researchers who want to switch.
What Aalto University is looking for
- A PhD in physics, electrical engineering or computer science, awarded or expected soon
- Preferred: design and fabrication of superconducting devices, cryogenic measurements, microwave electronics, simulations, quantum control and data analysis
- People from quantum optics, trapped atoms or ions, NV centres, quantum materials or nanoelectronics are considered, if they show strong motivation to move fields
- Hands-on drive and confidence to take the lead in the lab
Pay and location
Aalto follows the Finnish university salary system. The starting salary is about €4,229 a month and can rise to €4,649 a month with experience. The first contract is fixed term, for two years, and includes occupational health care. The workplace is the Otaniemi campus.
How to apply
Apply through the official Aalto University page. The closing date is 31 December 2026. Apply online with the “Apply now” link, as one PDF in English. Screening starts at once and runs on a rolling basis. Aalto says it will fill the post as soon as it finds a suitable candidate.

How to prepare for this application
- Revise circuit QED: transmons, dispersive readout, and how a resonator couples to a qubit.
- Read about parametric amplifiers: Josephson parametric amplifiers and squeezing for sensing.
- Know the axion idea: how a qubit could count single microwave photons from dark matter.
- Moving from optics? Explain clearly why you want to switch fields. The ad asks for strong motivation.
- Send one PDF: motivation letter, CV with skills and publications, degree certificates, transcripts and 2 referees.
