Job Description
This postdoc in quantum sensing at DTU uses scanning nitrogen-vacancy (NV) magnetometry. You will image hidden currents and magnetisation inside energy and electronic materials while they run. The job is 2 years from 1 January 2027. Apply by 9 November 2026.
At a glance
- Position: Postdoc, 2 years
- Where: DTU Energy, Technical University of Denmark, Kongens Lyngby, Denmark
- Contact: Senior Researcher Dennis Christensen
- Start: 1 January 2027, or by agreement
- Pay: Danish collective agreement; no figure in the ad
- Reference: 8227
- Apply: 9 November 2026, 23:59 Danish time
About the scanning NV magnetometry postdoc
- Measure buried current and magnetisation inside electronic, magnetic and energy materials and devices, while they operate
- Tune the sensing schemes of a new commercial scanning NV magnetometer, which runs from 2 to 330 °C with a 1 T vector magnet
- Help make the method a key characterisation tool at DTU Energy
- Work with materials scientists who make the samples, and with colleagues running DFT, phase-field and FEM models
- Run simulations with the group’s existing models, if you wish
Why this role matters
NV sensors can see magnetic fields at the nanoscale without touching the sample. Using them on working batteries and devices is new. This post sets up the method at a large energy lab.
What DTU is looking for
- A PhD or equivalent
- Experience with scanning probe microscopy or magnetic imaging
- Hands-on NV magnetometry, scanning SQUID or similar experience is a strong advantage
- Programming, ideally in Python
- A structured way of working, and excellent written and spoken English
Pay and location
Pay follows the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Supplements can be negotiated under DTU’s salary structure. The ad gives no figure. The job lasts 2 years and starts on 1 January 2027 or by agreement. DTU works on critical technology, so it may run open-source background checks.
How to apply
Apply through the official DTU page. The closing date is 9 November 2026, 23:59 Danish time. Apply online as one PDF in English. You must also email your cover letter to Dennis Christensen at dechr@dtu.dk with the subject “Scanning Magnetometry Postdoc”. The ad calls this mandatory.

How to prepare for this application
- Revise NV physics: spin-1 ground state, optically detected magnetic resonance and how field turns into a frequency shift.
- Know scanning NV: tip-sample distance, spatial resolution and how to rebuild current paths from a field map.
- Link it to energy: think how current crowding or magnetic domains show up in batteries, fuel cells or spintronic devices.
- Do the extra step: email your cover letter to the contact as well, with the subject 'Scanning Magnetometry Postdoc'.
- Use one PDF: cover letter, CV, MSc and PhD diplomas in English, and a publication list.
