Job Description

IIT Roorkee is recruiting two Junior Research Fellows (JRF) in geophysics for an ANRF-funded research project in the Earth Sciences Department, led by Simanchal Padhy (Principal Investigator). The project uses seismic ambient noise and P-wave coda correlation to image the detailed crustal structure of a sedimentary basin in Rajasthan. The fellows will process and interpret seismic data.

Seismic interferometry turns continuous background vibrations (ambient noise) and the late “coda” of earthquake waves into virtual seismic sources, letting researchers map the crust in detail without waiting for new earthquakes. It is widely used to study sedimentary basins and crustal structure.

About the JRF in geophysics

One of the two fellows will spend the first year at IIT Kanpur and the remaining two years at IIT Roorkee. The selected candidates may also get an opportunity for PhD admission.

Eligibility

  • M.Sc. or M.Tech in Geophysics
  • A GATE or NET qualification (mandatory)
  • Open to Indian nationals only

Among equally qualified and experienced candidates, SC/ST candidates will be preferred.

Fellowship and duration

  • Rs 37,000 per month plus HRA
  • Duration: 3 years

How to prepare for this geophysics JRF interview

  • Seismology fundamentals: body and surface waves, dispersion, and how crustal velocity structure shapes what a seismometer records.
  • Interferometry: how cross-correlating ambient noise between two stations approximates the wave field between them, and what coda waves are.
  • Data processing: filtering, instrument response removal and spectral analysis, and any tools you have used, such as ObsPy, SAC, Python or MATLAB.
  • GATE/NET preparation: revise the core geophysics syllabus; interview questions often start there.
  • Your M.Sc./M.Tech project: a clear two-minute summary of what you did and what you found.
