Job Description

IIT Roorkee’s Department of Earthquake Engineering is hiring a senior Project Consultant in seismic hazard assessment for a consultancy project on site-specific earthquake design parameters for Pandoh Dam, sponsored by the Bhakra Beas Management Board and led by Dr. B.K. Maheshwari. The post is aimed at a very experienced earth scientist.

At a glance

  • Position: Project Consultant (1 post)
  • Project: Site Specific Earthquake Design Parameters for Pandoh Dam
  • Sponsor: Bhakra Beas Management Board
  • Pay: Rs 1,50,000 per month plus HRA
  • Duration: 1 year
  • Apply by: 18 September 2026, 4:00 PM; interview 24 September 2026, 10:15 AM

Before a dam, power plant or bridge is built or re-assessed, engineers need earthquake design parameters for that exact site: how strongly the ground is likely to shake, and at which frequencies. Working these out combines regional seismicity, local geology and ground-motion models, and the results feed directly into design codes and safety decisions.

About the project consultant role

  • Conduct site-specific seismic hazard and earthquake design parameter studies for major infrastructure, including hydroelectric power plants, thermal and gas power plants, bridges and buildings
  • Interpret geological, geotechnical and seismological data for seismic assessment and design
  • Evaluate ground motion characteristics, ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs), response spectra and seismic zoning provisions under the relevant Indian Standard codes, particularly IS 1893: 2016

The job description in the notice also lists at least 10 years of teaching experience in seismic hazard assessment, including supervising M.Tech and Ph.D. students.

Eligibility

  • Ph.D. in Earth Sciences with at least 20 years of relevant experience
  • At least 10 years of teaching experience in seismic hazard assessment and supervising M.Tech and Ph.D. students (listed in the job description)

Open to Indian nationals only. Among equally qualified candidates, SC/ST candidates will be preferred. No TA/DA is paid for attending the interview.

Pay and duration

  • Rs 1,50,000 per month plus HRA
  • Duration: 1 year

How to apply

Email your application to the Principal Investigator’s office at office@eq.iitr.ac.in with an application on plain paper and a detailed CV (degrees and certificates in chronological order), your research, industrial and other experience, and attested copies of your degree and experience certificates. Bring originals to the interview for verification.

Key dates

  • Applications close: 18 September 2026, 4:00 PM
  • Interview: 24 September 2026, 10:15 AM

How to prepare for this application

  • Hazard methods: be ready to compare probabilistic and deterministic seismic hazard analysis for a dam site.
  • Ground motion: selection of GMPEs for the Himalayan region and how you handle their uncertainty.
  • Codes: IS 1893: 2016 provisions and how site-specific studies go beyond zone factors.
  • Past projects: prepare two site-specific studies you led and the design parameters they produced.
  • Supervision record: list the M.Tech and Ph.D. theses you have guided in seismic hazard.

About IIT Roorkee
