IIT Madras is hiring a Postdoctoral Researcher in computer vision and deep learning in the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering, coordinated by Prof. Babaji Srinivasan. The role covers everything from vision foundation models and vision-language models to diffusion-based generation, and includes mentoring Ph.D. scholars.

Computer vision has moved quickly from task-specific CNNs to large vision transformers, foundation models trained on huge image collections, and multimodal models that link images with text. Research postdocs in this area now combine new model design with careful experiments on GPUs and real-world data.
About the postdoctoral role
- Carry out independent and collaborative research in computer vision and AI, and develop new algorithms and deep learning architectures
- Design, implement and evaluate state-of-the-art computer vision models, build research prototypes and validate them rigorously
- Publish in high-quality journals and international conferences, and contribute to proposals, technical reports and project deliverables
- Mentor Ph.D. scholars, research students and project staff, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams
The group wants expertise in one or more of: image and video understanding; detection, classification, segmentation and recognition; CNNs, vision transformers and vision foundation models; vision-language and multimodal models; generative AI and diffusion models; 3D vision, pose estimation and tracking; self-supervised and representation learning; and image or video generation and enhancement. Strong Python, hands-on PyTorch and/or TensorFlow, OpenCV and GPU-based training are expected. Desirable: building end-to-end vision systems, large-scale datasets and distributed training or deployment, and driving projects from concept to publication or prototype.
Eligibility
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Electronics and Communication, Electrical Engineering, Robotics or a closely related discipline
- Candidates with a strong research background in computer vision and deep learning are encouraged to apply
