Job Description
The University of Copenhagen’s Department of Pharmacy is offering a PhD fellowship in single-molecule native mass spectrometry, developing new techniques such as charge detection mass spectrometry to study protein assemblies, including antibodies and protein-based vaccines. The project is part of an ERC Starting Grant (DeMIST).
At a glance
- Position: PhD fellowship, Protein Analysis Group, Department of Pharmacy
- Supervisor: Tenure-track Assistant Professor Victor Yin
- Start: 1 January 2027 or by agreement
- Duration: 3 years
- Apply: 27 September 2026, 23:59
About the PhD project
- Develop and apply new single-molecule native mass spectrometry methods for biomolecular assemblies
- Use new, state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instruments in the group
- Study systems of therapeutic interest such as antibodies and protein-based vaccines
- Complete PhD courses, a research stay abroad or at another group, teaching or dissemination, and a thesis
Proteins and other large biomolecules are a fast-growing class of medicines, and characterising them needs specialised tools. Native mass spectrometry weighs intact proteins and complexes, and single-molecule methods extend this to large, varied assemblies that conventional instruments struggle with.
A Danish PhD combines supervised research with about 30 ECTS of PhD courses, a research stay at another group, and some teaching or dissemination, ending in a PhD thesis. Positions are advertised with a fixed project and supervisor, and applicants apply to that specific project.
What University of Copenhagen is looking for
- A relevant master’s degree (or a bachelor’s plus master’s-level qualification from abroad) in chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics or pharmaceutical science
- A strong interest in the analytical and physical chemistry of proteins and in analytical instrumentation
- An analytical mindset and motivation for fundamental questions with societal relevance
Nice to have
- Prior experience with (native) mass spectrometry, basic programming or Fourier analysis
Pay and location
Salary, pension and terms of employment follow the agreement between the Danish Ministry and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC); the posting gives no figure. The position is based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
How to apply
Apply through the official University of Copenhagen page. The closing date is 27 September 2026, 23:59. Apply through the University of Copenhagen job portal using the “Apply now” link on the official posting, which lists the documents to include.

How to prepare for this application
- Native MS basics: know how intact proteins are kept folded in the gas phase.
- Charge detection MS: read how it measures mass and charge of individual ions.
- Signal processing: brush up on Fourier analysis, which the posting lists as a bonus.
- Therapeutic proteins: think about why antibodies and vaccines are hard to characterise.
- Motivation: explain your interest in instrumentation as well as biology.
About the University of Copenhagen
The University of Copenhagen, founded in 1479, is Denmark's oldest and largest university. In Denmark, PhD students are normally employed on full-time salaried contracts, with pay and terms set by national collective agreements, and the standard PhD lasts three years after a master's degree.
