Dr. Anuj Kumar’s MIND Lab at IIIT-Delhi has a PhD position in spintronics and quantum electronic devices, open to candidates who already hold a CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF or equivalent national fellowship. The project covers magnetic tunnel junctions, emerging memory devices and skyrmion-based devices, combining hands-on device work with simulation. Spintronic devices store and process information using the spin of electrons as well as their charge. Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) are already used in commercial MRAM chips, and research groups are now trying to use them, along with magnetic textures called skyrmions, for low-power memory and brain-inspired (neuromorphic) computing. This PhD sits in that fast-moving area, where device physics, nanofabrication and AI hardware meet.

What the PhD involves

  • Experimental and simulation-driven research on quantum electronic and spintronic devices, aimed at advanced memory and intelligent nanoelectronic devices
  • Work on magnetic tunnel junctions switched by spin-transfer torque (STT) and spin-orbit torque (SOT), for memory and neuromorphic computing
  • Thin-film growth, micro- and nanofabrication, device characterisation, and electrical and magnetic measurements
  • Device modelling and micromagnetic simulation with tools such as MuMax3, COMSOL, TensorFlow and Python
  • Collaboration with the National University of Singapore (NUS) and A*STAR Singapore, with opportunities for research visits to leading national and international facilities, according to Dr. Kumar’s announcement

Eligibility

  • A valid CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF or equivalent national-level fellowship. The lab’s page also mentions INSPIRE and similar national fellowships
  • A background in Physics, Electronics or ECE, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, or a related discipline
  • Preferred experience: thin-film deposition, electrical or magnetic characterisation, MuMax3, and TensorFlow, PyTorch or similar simulation tools

Candidates without a national fellowship can still join the group through IIIT-Delhi’s regular PhD admissions, which the lab says usually run twice a year. This listing is for fellowship holders applying directly to the lab.

According to his IIIT-Delhi faculty profile, Dr. Anuj Kumar completed his PhD at IIT Roorkee in 2021, was an Institute of Eminence postdoctoral fellow at IISc Bangalore, and was a postdoctoral research fellow at the National University of Singapore from 2022 to 2025.
