Job Description
Prof. Surjya Kanta Pal in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur is recruiting a Senior Research Fellow (SRF) for a project on a universal AI-driven multi-sensor platform that monitors weld quality in real time and adapts the process, aiming at zero-defect smart manufacturing. The post needs two years of research experience, and the last date is 21 September 2026.
At a glance
- Position: Senior Research Fellow (1 post), Ref. IIT/SRIC/R/WQM/2026/103
- Project: Universal AI-Driven Multi-Sensor Platform for Real-Time Weld Quality Monitoring and Adaptive Control towards Zero-Defect Smart Manufacturing
- PI: Prof. Surjya Kanta Pal, Mechanical Engineering
- Upper age limit: 32
- Apply by: 21 September 2026 (online, no fee)
Weld defects such as porosity, lack of fusion or cracks are expensive to find after the fact. Monitoring the arc or joint with several sensors, such as current and voltage, acoustic, thermal or vision signals, and letting a model adjust the process as it runs, is a central idea in smart manufacturing.
What the role involves
- Research on a multi-sensor platform for real-time weld quality monitoring, as set out in the project title
- AI models that relate sensor signals to weld quality, and adaptive control of the welding process
- Work towards zero-defect manufacturing within a sponsored project managed by SRIC
Eligibility
- A postgraduate degree in basic science, or a graduate or postgraduate degree in a professional course, with selection through a national test (CSIR-UGC NET including lectureship, or GATE) or a national-level exam run by bodies such as DST, DBT, DAE, DOS, DRDO, MoE, ICAR, ICMR, IIT, IISc, IISER or NISER
- Two years of research experience
- Upper age limit: 32
The advertisement does not list desired skills, tenure or the interview process.
Pay and duration
- The pay field in the online advertisement is blank; confirm the fellowship amount with the PI
- Project-linked post
How to apply
Apply online through IIT Kharagpur’s SRIC staff recruitment portal, using the Apply Online button on the official advertisement. The advertisement lists no application fee. Apply before 21 September 2026. Other current SRIC project openings are on the SRIC recruitment page.
Key dates
- Last date to apply: 21 September 2026

How to prepare for this application
- Document your two years: the SRF grade depends on research experience, so give exact dates and the projects or labs where you worked.
- Show sensor and ML work together: welding, machining or process-monitoring projects where you trained models on sensor signals match this project closely.
- Fill the portal form carefully: SRIC screens applications on what you enter, so give exact marks, CGPA and dates, and upload the documents it asks for.
- Check the age limit and relaxations: the upper age limit is stated in the advertisement, and relaxation for reserved categories follows institute norms.
- Contact the PI's group if unsure: faculty email addresses are on IIT Kharagpur's department pages; keep any query short and specific.
About IIT Kharagpur and SRIC
IIT Kharagpur, founded in 1951, was the first of the Indian Institutes of Technology. Its Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy (SRIC) unit manages externally funded research projects and recruits the temporary staff, such as JRFs, SRFs, project associates and project assistants, who work on them. These are project-linked posts: they last for the tenure the advertisement gives, or until the project ends.
