Job Description
Amazon Devices, the group behind Kindle, Fire tablets, Fire TV and Echo, is hiring an Applied Scientist II in Bengaluru to bring generative AI onto edge devices. The work is about making models small and fast enough for Amazon’s own ML hardware: quantising, pruning, distilling and fine-tuning generative models, and co-designing them with Amazon’s Neural Edge Engine. The team publishes, and the posting names NeurIPS, ICLR and MLSys.

About the edge generative AI role
- Quantise, prune, distil and fine-tune generative AI models for edge platforms
- Understand Amazon’s Neural Edge Engine in depth and invent optimisation techniques for it
- Analyse deep learning workloads and advise how to map them onto the hardware
- Train custom generative models that beat the state of the art and lead to production models, using first principles from information theory, scientific computing and deep learning theory
- Work with compiler engineers, hardware architects, other scientists and product teams, and publish and present at ML conferences
What Amazon is looking for
- At least 2 years of building models for business applications
- A PhD, or a master’s degree and at least 4 years of experience in CS, CE, ML or a related field
- Patents or publications at top peer-reviewed conferences or journals
- Programming in Java, C++, Python or a related language
- Experience in algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimisation, data mining, or parallel, distributed or high-performance computing
- A strong foundation in the relevant mathematics, such as linear algebra and calculus
Nice to have

How to prepare for this application
- Compression toolkit: be ready to explain post-training quantisation vs quantisation-aware training, structured pruning and distillation trade-offs.
- Hardware awareness: revise how memory bandwidth, operator support and integer arithmetic shape model design on accelerators.
- Show a result: bring one example where you shrank a model and measured accuracy, latency and memory before and after.
- Papers: publications are a basic requirement here, so list them prominently.
- Leadership Principles: Amazon interviews lean on them; prepare two or three STAR stories for each.
