Job Description

The Raman Research Institute (RRI) in Bengaluru is hiring two Research Assistants for the project Quantum Technology with Ultra-cold Rydberg Atoms in its Light and Matter Physics (LAMP) group. They will work in the Quantum Optics with Rydberg Atoms Lab (QuORAL) under Dr. Sanjukta Roy, helping design, assemble and calibrate the lasers, optics and electronics used for quantum technology with cold atoms. Rydberg atoms are atoms excited to very high energy levels, which makes them interact strongly with each other and with electric fields. Cold-atom labs use lasers to cool atoms close to absolute zero and then control them with light, radio-frequency and microwave fields, which is the kind of equipment these assistants will work with.

What the research assistants will do

  • Design, assemble and calibrate components and devices for quantum technology with cold atoms and lasers
  • Work with optical components, laser sources, power supplies, and RF and microwave components
  • Work as part of a team of scientists and PhD scholars on scientific and technical development

Eligibility

  • M.Sc. in physics, engineering physics, quantum technology or a related field, or B.E./B.Tech. in engineering physics, electronics or a related field, with at least 60% marks or equivalent
  • An M.Tech., M.Phil. or equivalent degree with thesis work is preferred; final-year candidates may apply and must show the provisional certificate on joining
  • Upper age limit 28 years on the closing date, with relaxation for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates as per Government of India rules
  • Desirable: lasers and control electronics; optics alignment; processing raw imaging data and simple simulations; LabVIEW, Python or MATLAB to synchronise lasers, shutters and cameras; RF and microwave signal processing

RRI may limit the number of candidates called for test or interview, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a call. Preference goes to candidates with hands-on experience in a related research area. Incomplete applications, especially those without a statement of purpose, are not considered.

Pay and duration

  • Rs 31,000 per month, consolidated, plus admissible HRA
  • Temporary appointment under the project
