Job Description
The Raman Research Institute in Bengaluru is hiring a Research Assistant to work with Prof. Sumati Surya in its Theoretical Physics group. The project studies kinematic and dynamical aspects of the causal set approach to quantum gravity from a mainly numerical angle, so the post needs a strong background in general relativity and quantum field theory together with C++ programming. The last date to apply is 5 October 2026.
At a glance
- Position: Research Assistant (1 post), Advertisement No. 22/2026 dated 1 September 2026
- Group: Theoretical Physics, RRI
- Guide: Prof. Sumati Surya
- Pay: Rs 31,000 per month plus HRA
- Duration: One year, extendable by one more year
- Age limit: 30 years on the closing date
- Apply by: 5 October 2026 (online)
Causal set theory models spacetime as a discrete set of events ordered by cause and effect, and much current work tests its predictions with large computer simulations. This assistant would write and run such numerical studies.
What the research assistant will do
- Work on kinematical and dynamical aspects of causal set quantum gravity
- Develop and run numerical methods, mainly in C++
Eligibility
- M.Sc. or integrated M.Sc. in physics or mathematics with a strong background in general relativity and quantum field theory
- Experience with and interest in numerical methods, especially in C++
- Upper age limit 30 years on the closing date, with relaxation for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates as per Government of India rules
RRI will consider all applications received by the due date. If no suitable candidate is selected, the advertisement says the post will stay open on the institute website until filled. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an interview, and applications without a statement of purpose are not considered.
