CSIR-IHBT, Palampur, is holding a walk-in interview on 24 September 2026 for a Project Research Scientist-I in proteomics and metabolomics on CYST-OMICS, a pan-India multicentric study of neurocysticercosis that aims to support its diagnosis and help understand epilepsy (Advertisement No. 16/2026, position code 16016).

Neurocysticercosis is an infection of the brain by the larval stage of the pork tapeworm and a leading preventable cause of epilepsy in many parts of the world. The project (GAP-0337) studies its metabolomic and proteomic signature; note that the advertisement’s project title spells the disease “neurocpsticerosis”.
Why this role matters
Diagnosis currently relies on brain imaging and antibody tests, which are not available everywhere. Molecular markers from a multicentre study could make diagnosis easier and explain why some patients develop epilepsy, and the post is a paid entry into clinical omics research.

Eligibility
- A first-class postgraduate degree in biotechnology, biochemistry or life sciences, including integrated postgraduate degrees
- Or a second-class postgraduate degree in these subjects (including integrated) together with a PhD
- Desirable: experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, proteomics and metabolomics
- Age: at most 35 as on 24 September 2026 (five years’ relaxation for SC/ST/PwBD and women, three years for OBC)
Candidates reporting after 10:00 AM are not allowed to appear, and online interviews are not offered. Candidates whose results are awaited are not eligible. The selection committee may hold a multiple-choice test before the interview on the same day. Engagement is temporary, on behalf of the sponsoring agency, and lasts for the project or six years, whichever is earlier; performance is reviewed every six months. No travelling allowance is paid. How to prepare for this application
- Know the disease: revise the life cycle of Taenia solium, how neurocysticercosis causes seizures, and current diagnostic methods.
- Proteomics workflow: be ready to explain sample preparation, LC-MS/MS, database searching and label-free or labelled quantification.
- Metabolomics: know targeted versus untargeted approaches, NMR and mass spectrometry platforms, and basic multivariate statistics such as PCA and PLS-DA.
- Multicentre data: think about batch effects, sample handling and quality control when samples come from several hospitals.
