QuTech at TU Delft is hiring a doctoral candidate for a PhD position in quantum networks, working on ways to improve the quality of entanglement between network nodes, as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie QUESTING Doctoral Network.

About the PhD in quantum networks
- Extend, improve and evaluate tools that raise the quality of entanglement shared between quantum network nodes
- Study entanglement distillation, possibly connecting it with quantum error correction
- Analyse cut-off policies that discard low-quality entanglement
- Work with both simulation and analytical calculation
- Spend research stays of a few months at the University of Naples Federico II (Italy) and EURECOM (France), and join the network’s training programme
The group designs quantum networks and quantum circuits using methods from (formal) computer science, and its members come from computer science, physics, electrical engineering and mathematics. QUESTING is a European doctoral network funded by the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions to train researchers for the quantum internet.
Why this role matters
A quantum internet is only useful if the entanglement it delivers is good enough to use, and today that quality is limited by loss, noise and memory decay. Better distillation and smarter cut-off rules are some of the cheapest ways to close the gap. The project is theory and simulation based, so it suits a computer scientist or physicist who likes rigorous analysis, and the MSCA secondments build a European network early in the PhD.
What TU Delft is looking for
- A master’s degree in computer science, physics or a closely related field
- Exposure to quantum computing or quantum information, through coursework or equivalent experience
- Good communication skills and willingness to work across disciplines in an international consortium
- MSCA mobility rule: you must not have lived or had your main activity (work or study) in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 36 months before the recruitment date
Pay and location
Pay follows the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities: €3,204 gross a month in the first year rising to €4,051 in the fourth, for a 38-hour week, plus an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The four years are split into an initial 1.5-year contract with a go/no-go assessment within 15 months, then a 2.5-year contract. The PhD starts on 1 December 2026.
