Job Description
This fibre optic sensor project job in Kolkata is one Project Associate-I (PAT-I) post at CSIR-CGCRI’s Fibre Optics and Photonics Division, on the CSIR-funded project “Fiber Optic Sensors for Advanced Monitoring Applications”, with a walk-in interview on 30 September 2026 (Advt. No. 29/2627/FOPD/OLP2315/SL, post code 29/2627/01).
At a glance
- Position: Project Associate-I (PAT-I), 01 post
- Where: CSIR-CGCRI, Jadavpur, Kolkata
- Pay: Rs 31,000 + HRA with NET/GATE (or equivalent); Rs 25,000 + HRA otherwise
- Duration: One year at first; any extension depends on funds
- Apply by: Email the application by 28 September 2026; walk-in interview 30 September 2026 from 2:00 pm
The project code is OLP2315 and the sponsor is CSIR. The post is open to Indian citizens. NET or GATE is not essential here: it decides which of the two stipend rates applies.
Why this role matters
Fibre-optic sensors measure strain, temperature and vibration in places where electrical sensors fail: high voltage, strong fields, long distances or harsh environments. Building them is as much hands-on engineering as optics, which is why this post welcomes mechanical and instrumentation graduates as well as physicists. It is an accessible first research post for a B.Tech. graduate who wants to work with optical hardware.
The advertisement names the skills it values for sensor development: coding, simulation, and building things.
What the fibre optic sensor project post involves
- Development of fibre-optic sensors for advanced monitoring applications
- Work that uses the skills the advertisement lists as useful for fibre-optic sensor development: Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB, COMSOL and AutoCAD; handling electronic and optoelectronic instruments; and CNC machining, engineering drawing and 3D printing
The advertisement gives the project title and desirable skills rather than a list of duties.
Eligibility
- M.Sc. in Physics, Electronics, Applied Physics or Opto-Electronics
- Or B.Tech. in Electronics, Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical or Biotechnology
- Desirable: Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB, COMSOL, AutoCAD; working knowledge of electronic or optoelectronic instruments, or of CNC machines, engineering drawing, AutoCAD and 3D printing
- Age limit: 35 years on the date of interview
The advertisement asks for the typed application form (not hand-written) in the institute’s prescribed format, with self-attested soft copies of every supporting document. Candidates whose results are awaited are not eligible. Anyone already working on a project at CGCRI or another institute must attach a no-objection certificate from their current project leader. If your university awards a CGPA, you must convert it to a percentage using your university’s own rule and attach a self-attested copy of that rule. The upper age limit is relaxed by up to 5 years for SC, ST, physically handicapped and female candidates, and by 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates. Meeting the minimum qualification does not guarantee a call for interview, and the number of posts may change.
Pay and duration
- Rs 31,000 a month plus HRA as admissible, for candidates selected through CSIR-UGC NET (including lectureship), ICAR NET, ICMR NET or GATE, or through a national-level examination held by central government departments
- Rs 25,000 a month plus HRA as admissible for other candidates
- Initially one year; any extension subject to availability of funds
How to apply
Email a soft copy of the filled-in CGCRI application form for project staff to recruitment.cgcri@csir.res.in, with self-attested soft copies of your certificates, mark sheets and any reprints. A separate application is needed for each post code. Bring the originals and self-attested copies of all documents, and your project thesis if you have one, to the interview, and report at least one hour before the interview time: the advertisement says late arrivals will not be allowed into the institute. The walk-in interview is at CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata, on 30 September 2026 from 2:00 pm.
Key dates
- Last date for the emailed application: 28 September 2026
- Walk-in interview: 30 September 2026 from 2:00 pm (report one hour earlier for document checks)
Please read the official CSIR-CGCRI advertisement (Advt. 29/2627, post code 29/2627/01) before applying, and browse more research assistant jobs on ResearchJobs.in.
Hiring institution: CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI)
Official advertisement: www.cgcri.res.in
How to prepare for this application
- Fill in the prescribed form on a computer, not by hand; CGCRI says incomplete or non-format applications are rejected outright
- Convert any CGPA to a percentage using your own university's rule, and attach that rule as a self-attested soft copy, as the advertisement requires
- Bring a small portfolio: a LabVIEW or Python data-acquisition script, a CAD drawing or a 3D-printed part you designed, whichever you have
- Learn how a fibre Bragg grating works and why its reflected wavelength shifts with strain and temperature; it is the workhorse of fibre sensing
- Be ready to explain how you would separate a temperature effect from a strain effect in a single sensor reading
About CSIR-CGCRI
The Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute in Jadavpur, Kolkata, is a laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) working on glass, ceramics and related materials. Its Fibre Optics and Photonics Division makes speciality optical fibres in-house, from preform fabrication and drawing through to fibre lasers, fibre gratings and fibre-optic sensors, which is why several of the institute's project posts sit in photonics rather than in ceramics.
