Job Description

This quantum error correction job at Atom Computing is a theorist role in the company’s QEC team, developing fault-tolerance schemes, decoders and simulation tools for quantum computers built from arrays of optically trapped neutral atoms, based in Berkeley, California, or Boulder, Colorado.

At a glance

  • Position: Quantum Error Correction Theorist (full time, hybrid)
  • Where: Berkeley, California, or Boulder, Colorado, USA
  • Pay: Base salary $160,000 to $185,000 a year, plus annual bonus and equity
  • Apply: open until filled (re-checked 23 October 2026)

What the quantum error correction theorist works on

  • Develop and optimise fault-tolerance schemes for gate-based atomic-array quantum computers
  • Develop and evaluate strategies for moving atoms during fault-tolerant computation
  • Work with software and control-systems teams on the classical compute layers fault tolerance needs
  • Develop and implement decoders, and build and maintain quantum-simulation tools
  • Implement error correction on the company’s quantum hardware

Why this role matters

Neutral atoms can be moved during a computation, which allows connectivity patterns and codes that fixed-wiring platforms cannot use. Deciding how to move them without losing time or fidelity is a new design problem in fault tolerance. This role pairs that theory with running error correction on real hardware, so a theorist sees whether the scheme works in practice.

What Atom Computing is looking for

  • A PhD in physics, mathematics, computer science or a related field
  • Experience with quantum error correction theory or experiment
  • Willingness to turn abstract ideas into concrete demonstrations on real quantum hardware
  • Suited to an early-stage startup: self-motivated, collaborative and comfortable with ambiguity
  • Ability to work with experimental physicists and hardware and software engineers
  • Familiarity with Python and Git

Pay and location

The posting states a base salary of $160,000 to $185,000 a year, depending on experience, plus an annual bonus and equity. Benefits include fully paid medical, dental and vision insurance for employees and dependents, unlimited paid time off, 401(k) matching and life insurance. The role is hybrid, in Berkeley, California, or Boulder, Colorado.

How to apply

Apply through the official Atom Computing job posting. Atom Computing’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 23 October 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application

  • Prepare a short talk on one code or decoder you have worked on, with thresholds or logical error rates and the noise model behind them
  • Think about neutral-atom specifics: atom loss, erasure errors and the time cost of moving atoms, and how each changes the best choice of code and schedule
  • Show simulation tooling you built (for example with Stim or your own code) in a Git repository with tests
  • Be ready to discuss real-time decoding and the latency limits a classical control stack puts on fault tolerance
  • Read Atom Computing's public papers and announcements on its atomic-array platform before any interview
