Job Description

The UBEL Doctoral Training Partnership has opened its main competition for fully funded ESRC PhD studentships in London for 2027 entry. The awards pay tuition fees at the UKRI rate and a maintenance stipend across 30 social-science pathways, including Educational Neuroscience, Psychology, Quantitative Social Science and Economics, at six London universities led by UCL.

• A funded doctorate in one of 30 disciplinary pathways, grouped under six themes such as Learning, Communication and Cognition, and Health, Resilience, Well-being and Welfare
• Pathways include Educational Neuroscience, Psychology, Education, Linguistics, Behaviour Change, Mental Health Research, Quantitative Social Science, Economics and Business and Data Analytics
• Study routes with an attached master’s (MRes, MSc or MA) as well as direct doctoral routes, full time or part time
• Training throughout the PhD, with the expectation of a placement in academia, policy, business or civil society
• Access to UBEL’s research training support and placement schemes

Why this role matters

Fully funded social-science PhDs in London are scarce, and ESRC awards are among the few open to international as well as home students. The route runs through a supervisor: you agree a proposal with a potential supervisor and the pathway team before the DTP ranks candidates. That makes the October pre-registration the real starting line, not the February full application.

What UBEL DTP is looking for

• An upper second or first class honours degree, or a master’s, from a recognised UK university, or an equivalent qualification from outside the UK, held or expected by 30 September 2027
• For the +3.5 route, a master’s degree with an appropriate level of research training
• A chosen pathway, and a PhD proposal discussed with a potential supervisor at one of the partner universities
• Contact with the relevant pathway leader at your chosen university before you apply

Pay and location

For 2026/27 a UBEL studentship covers tuition fees of £5,238 and a minimum stipend of £23,805, which includes the London Allowance. Home students are UK nationals meeting residency rules, or people with settled or pre-settled status or indefinite leave to remain or enter; everyone else is classed as international. UBEL can give no more than 30% of its awards to international students, cannot cover visa costs, and reports that for 2025 entry it made 10 international awards from 485 international applicants, so international funding is highly competitive.
