Job Description
This PhD position in quantum technology at Chalmers is about levitated superconducting microparticles. You will design superconducting circuits that couple to the motion of a particle floating in a magnetic trap on a chip. The aim is to put a large object into quantum states.
At a glance
- Position: Doctoral student (reference REF 2026-0470), fully funded
- Where: Quantum Technology Laboratory (QTL), Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2), Gothenburg
- Supervisor: Prof. Witlef Wieczorek
- Pay: SEK 35,725 a month starting salary (valid from 1 May 2026)
- Duration: 4 years; up to 5 years with up to 20% teaching
- Apply: 27 October 2026
About the levitated-particle quantum technology project
- Design, simulate and fabricate superconducting quantum circuit elements
- Couple those circuits efficiently to the motion of a magnetically levitated microparticle
- Run experiments with your own devices
- Take advanced courses in the MC2 graduate school
- Teach at undergraduate level or do other duties, about 20% of your time
The group levitates superconducting microparticles on a chip. This isolates their motion very well. The platform could give very sensitive force and acceleration sensors. It could also allow quantum experiments with objects of about 1013 atomic mass units. The project uses superconducting circuit technology from the Wallenberg Center for Quantum Technology.
Why this role matters
Testing quantum mechanics with heavier and heavier objects is a big open question in physics. This project also trains you in cleanroom work and superconducting circuits, which quantum computing companies need.
What Chalmers is looking for
- A 120-credit master’s (or 60-credit magister) in Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Nanotechnology or similar
- For degrees from outside Sweden, a 4-year bachelor’s degree is accepted, so a 4-year BTech or BS can qualify
- Strong spoken and written English
- A proactive, driven attitude and motivation for experimental research
Nice to have
- Experience in quantum optics, quantum technology, superconducting circuits or microfabrication
Pay and location
The starting salary is SEK 35,725 a month, valid from 1 May 2026. PhD students at Chalmers are employees with full benefits. The post is funded from the start for four years. You must be in Gothenburg for the whole study period, and you need a valid residence permit by the start date.
How to apply
Apply through the official Chalmers page. The closing date is 27 October 2026. Apply online with a CV, a personal letter, and your theses and transcripts. Email applications are not considered.
