This photonic packaging engineer job is at PsiQuantum’s UK R&D site at Daresbury Laboratory. You will build the packages that connect optical fibres to silicon photonic chips. PsiQuantum uses these chips to build photonic quantum computers.

What the photonic packaging engineer does

• Design an optical package and a fibre-to-chip alignment scheme with high accuracy that can scale
• Build packaging prototypes and scalable fibre-to-chip assembly flows
• Review packaging BOMs and work with supply chain to buy parts
• Transfer and scale designs and processes with the internal team and outside vendors
• Work with partners on advanced opto-electronic packaging

Why this role matters

A photonic quantum computer needs many chips joined by fibre, and every lost photon hurts. Low-loss, repeatable fibre attachment is one of the hard engineering steps between a lab demo and a large machine.

What PsiQuantum is looking for

• Master’s degree or above in Optical Engineering, Physics or equivalent
• 3+ years of PIC packaging design and qualification
• 5+ years working with optical fibres and optical measurements
• 3+ years attaching fibre arrays (FAU) or optical connectors to chips
• Experience analysing optical data
