Job Description
Microsoft is hiring for a postdoc in AI research in Bengaluru. It is in the Future of Scalable Software Engineering (FoSSE) team, part of Microsoft’s CoreAI group. The team uses AI and formal methods to solve software engineering problems in large codebases, and sits with Microsoft Research India.
At a glance
- Position: Post Doc Researcher, FoSSE team, CoreAI (job 200049580)
- Where: Bengaluru, Karnataka, India; on site
- Duration: 1 to 2 years
- Tracks: Programming languages (PL) or reinforcement learning (RL) for LLM post-training
- Apply: open until filled (re-checked 31 October 2026)
What the AI research postdoc works on
- Applied research at the meeting point of programming languages, software engineering and AI
- Real problems in large codebases, such as code migration, code translation and static analysis
- Building and testing tools that run on real, large code
- PL track: programming languages, compilers and related areas, combined with AI
- RL track: LLM post-training (for example RLHF, instruction tuning, alignment and evaluation) applied to software engineering
Why this role matters
Large companies spend years moving old code to new languages and platforms. AI can speed this up, but only if the changes stay correct. FoSSE combines language models with formal methods and static analysis to get both speed and correctness. Postdocs get mentoring from Microsoft researchers and see their work used by product groups. Industry postdocs like this are rare in India.
What Microsoft is looking for
- A PhD in Computer Science or a related discipline
- A strong background in one or both tracks: programming languages and compilers, or LLM post-training
- Interest in applying these methods to software engineering at scale
Pay and location
The posting does not state pay. The role is on site in Bengaluru, where the team is co-located with Microsoft Research India. The team also has full-time researchers and engineers, along with interns and research fellows on fixed terms.
How to apply
Apply through the official Microsoft job posting. Microsoft’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 31 October 2026. Apply with your CV. You also need at least two recommendation letters, which your referees must email directly to the team’s hiring address given in the posting. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application
- Pick your track (PL or RL) and make your CV show clear depth in it
- Contact two referees early; their letters go straight to the team by email and your application is not complete without them
- Prepare a short talk on your best paper and how its ideas could help with code migration or static analysis
- Read recent work on LLMs for code translation and on checking AI-generated code with formal tools
- Be ready to discuss how you would evaluate a code-migration tool on a real, messy codebase
