What an ETH AI Center postdoc fellow does
- Propose and lead your own project, in AI foundations or between AI and an application area
- Work with two mentors from different fields who share supervision equally
- Have a desk at the ETH AI Center and join its retreats, symposia and summits
- Optionally follow an entrepreneurial or industry track
- Report on progress and take part in centre events
Why this role matters
Few postdocs let you set your own research agenda. This one does, with two senior mentors and a salary at Swiss levels. Fellows sit in a centre that links AI groups across ETH, which makes it easy to start projects that cross fields. The fellowship is a strong first step towards a faculty career.
What the ETH AI Center is looking for
- A PhD, or a PhD finished at least 3 months before the start (by June 2027 at the latest); the guidelines also say the PhD must be held or completed within 10 months of the deadline
- A background in AI, or in computer science, physics, engineering or applied mathematics
- Good English and a spirit for interdisciplinary teamwork
Pay and location
The salary is CHF 92,500 in the first year and rises automatically to CHF 97,200 in the second. The job is in Zurich, on site. Benefits listed include five weeks’ leave, childcare subsidies and day-care places, paid parental leave, and training and language courses. The advertisement mentions 8–12 positions and the guidelines say 5–8 fellowships a year, so expect several places.
How to apply
Apply through the official the ETH AI Center page. The closing date is 27 October 2026, 16:00 CET. Upload a CV with publications, a motivation letter, a 1–2 page research statement, degree certificates and transcripts, and a 2–5 minute video on your research interests. Choose 1–3 Core Faculty and 1–3 Associated Faculty hosts in the form. Two or three reference letters are collected through the online form. Read the fellowship guidelines (PDF) first.

- Ask referees early; letters go through the online form
- Check the PhD-date rule in the guidelines against your defence date
