Job Description
Kyoto University’s Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP) has a postdoc in quantum machine learning. You will design quantum-enhanced features and algorithms using topological data analysis and quantum complexity theory. The post is funded by the JST ASPIRE project AMALUQS and includes stays in the Netherlands.
At a glance
- Position: Program-specific Researcher (postdoc), 1 post, Quantum Information Group
- Where: Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan
- Pay: Set by Kyoto University rules on an annual salary system; the ad gives no figure
- Contract: Renewable one-year terms up to 31 March 2030; start as soon as possible
- Work with: Ryu Hayakawa (co-PI of work package 1.B)
- Apply: 9:00 a.m. JST on Saturday 31 October 2026
What the quantum machine learning postdoc works on
- Work package 1.B of AMALUQS: quantum-enhanced feature design and algorithm development
- Methods from topological data analysis and quantum computational complexity theory
- International collaboration, including research stays in the Netherlands
- The project’s Japan-side PI is Kosuke Mitarai and the partner PI is Vedran Dunjko
Why this role matters
Whether quantum computers can help machine learning is still an open question. Topological data analysis is one area where researchers have proposed quantum speed-ups. This post joins a Japan–Netherlands project on that question, at a leading theory institute. The title of Research Assistant Professor may be given to strong candidates.
What Kyoto University is looking for
- A doctoral degree, or certainty of getting one by the appointment date
Pay and location
Salary follows Kyoto University’s regulations on an annual salary system, based on qualifications and experience. The ad lists no allowances and gives no figure. A small research budget is provided. Benefits include MEXT mutual aid, pension, employment and accident insurance. There is a six-month probation, and each one-year renewal depends on performance and funding. The ad says applications and inquiries from overseas are welcome.
How to apply
Apply through the official Kyoto University page. The closing date is 9:00 a.m. JST on Saturday 31 October 2026. Email your documents to ryu.hayakawa@yukawa.kyoto-u.ac.jp with the subject “ASPIRE-PD-apply”, as PDF if possible: a CV; a publication list showing your role in co-authored papers and marking up to three main papers; a summary of past research and a research plan; and the name and contact of at least one referee. The deadline is 9:00 a.m. Japan time, which is the evening of 30 October in Europe and India.
