IIT Roorkee is hiring a JRF in adaptive protection of power distribution networks with distributed energy resources (DER). The project is sponsored by GE Renewable Energy, and the JRF will be enrolled in a PhD. Pay is Rs 40,000 a month for two years, then Rs 45,000. Apply by email by 30 October 2026.
At a glance
- Position: Junior Research Fellow (JRF), 1 post
- Where: Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Roorkee, Uttarakhand
- Pay: Rs 40,000 a month for the first two years, Rs 45,000 for the next two (consolidated)
- Duration: 4 years, or until the project ends

The project is “Adaptive Protection of Distribution Network Systems with DER Integration”. The sponsor is GE Renewable Energy Technologies Private Ltd., India. The principal investigator is Prof. Manoj Tripathy of the Department of Electrical Engineering. The ad was signed on 25 September 2026.
What the distribution network protection JRF at IIT Roorkee will do
- Study and set up a smart distribution network in the lab, with hardware for different types of DER
- Develop adaptive protection algorithms for the distribution grid
- Validate and test those algorithms while the grid is running
Why this role matters
Rooftop solar and other DER now feed power into networks built for one-way flow. Old protection settings can then fail to clear faults or trip healthy lines. Adaptive protection fixes this, and India’s grid needs it as solar grows.
Eligibility
- Qualifications as printed: M.E./M.Tech. (Electrical Engineering/Power System and equivalent branches), B.Tech./B.E., with a valid GATE score
- Desirable: knowledge of power system protection, microgrid concepts and DER integration
- Indian nationals only
- The ad gives no age limit
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The interview schedule and mode will be sent by email. Bring original degrees and experience certificates to the interview. No TA/DA is paid.
Pay and duration
- Rs 40,000 a month for the first two years and Rs 45,000 a month for the next two years (consolidated)
- 4 years or until the project ends, whichever is earlier
- After the project ends, the ad says the student will get the MHRD fellowship as per institute policy
How to apply
Apply by email only to the PI at manoj.tripathy@ee.iitr.ac.in by 30 October 2026, 5:00 p.m. Send an application on plain paper with a detailed CV, your experience (research, industry and other), self-attested copies of degrees and experience certificates, and proof of your GATE score with marks, rank and year. The ad is listed on the IIT Roorkee project jobs page.

How to prepare for this application
- Attach your GATE proof. Marks, rank and year are all asked for. Missing any can cost you the shortlist.
- Revise protection basics. Overcurrent and distance relays, relay coordination and fault levels.
- Know why DER breaks old protection. Two-way power flow and changing fault currents upset fixed settings.
- Show any lab or simulation work. PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, RTDS or relay testing all count.
- Plan for a 4-year PhD. The post leads to PhD enrolment. Say what you want to research.
