The project

The laboratory develops advanced nanoscale measurement technologies for nanoscience, materials science and the life sciences. This post is part of a recently funded project and focuses on next-generation MEMS probes and instrumentation for cryogenic scanning probe microscopy and quantum measurements.

Scanning probe microscopy at cryogenic temperatures is where a lot of quantum materials work actually happens, and the probe is usually the limiting component. Designing a MEMS probe that performs at low temperature, and the instrumentation around it, is a microfabrication problem, a mechanics problem and a measurement problem at once.

What you need

  • A PhD in physics, electrical engineering, microengineering or a related field
  • Experience with MEMS design and microfabrication, scanning probe microscopy, or cryogenic measurement
  • Read the official advertisement for the full requirements

Pay and conditions

EPFL pays doctoral assistants and postdoctoral researchers on published Swiss federal scales, which are among the higher ones in Europe. This advertisement states no figure, so check the scale for your grade and the cost of living in Lausanne before you decide.

How to apply

Apply through the EPFL careers page for this post. The advertisement gives no closing date. EPFL reviews applications as they come in, so apply early.

How to prepare for this application

  • Cleanroom experience is close to essential. Name the processes you have run yourself.
  • Cryogenics changes everything. Any dilution refrigerator or closed-cycle cryostat work is worth stating up front.
  • EPFL works in English. Research and teaching at this level run in English, so French is useful but rarely required.
  • Doctoral candidates apply twice. A lab offer at EPFL is normally followed by admission to a doctoral programme, so check the programme's own requirements too.
