About the work

Luke Harland is establishing a new research group in the Loke Centre for Trophoblast Research, within the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience.

The group investigates how specialised blood and vascular cell types arise during mammalian development, and uses that knowledge to generate defined cell populations from pluripotent stem cells for mechanistic study and tissue modelling. The aim is to understand how developmental history shapes blood and vascular cell identity and function, and to apply that to better vascularised tissue models.

The initial focus is reconstructing the fetal placental exchange interface, the structure that lets oxygen and nutrients reach a growing fetus. The work combines embryology and stem cell biology.

Joining a group at its start is a particular kind of opportunity: more scope to shape how things are done, and more of the setting-up work.

What you need

  • Laboratory experience in stem cell culture, developmental biology or vascular biology
  • Read the official advertisement for the full person specification

How to prepare for this application

  • It is a brand new group. Expect to help build the laboratory as well as run experiments.
  • Pluripotent stem cell culture is the central skill. Name the lines and protocols you have used.
  • Quote the reference, PM51164. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
  • Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
