About the work
Bacterial infection and antimicrobial resistance are among the most pressing global health challenges. Cambridge’s Department of Medicine has a long international reputation in infection and immunity research, with strengths across bacterial pathogenesis, antimicrobial resistance, host-microbe interactions, genomics, metagenomics, mycobacterial disease, respiratory bacterial infection and vaccinology.
The appointee builds on that strength and helps shape what comes next. Based in the Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease, they will establish and lead an internationally recognised research programme.
A chair of this kind is as much about building as about research. The appointee is expected to attract people, win funding and set a direction that outlasts any single project, in a department that already has depth across infection and immunity.
What you need
- An outstanding research record in bacteriology, with the standing to lead a programme
- Read the official advertisement for the full particulars, including the appointment terms
Pay
The studentship is advertised as fully funded. The advertisement gives no figure, so confirm the stipend and fee cover with the department before you accept.

How to prepare for this application
- This is a programme-building post. Your case is a research vision for the next decade, backed by a publication list.
- Antimicrobial resistance is the stated driver. Position your work against it.
- Quote the reference, RC50977. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
- Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
