Job Description

IIT Hyderabad is hiring two Project Research Scientist-I (Non-Medical) staff for an ICMR-funded project on AI-assisted vein imaging. The team is building a portable near-infrared device that helps clinicians find veins in 3D. Apply by 15 October 2026.

At a glance

  • Post: Project Research Scientist-I (Non-Medical), two posts
  • Where: IIT Hyderabad; queries go to Prof. Vandana Sharma, Department of Physics
  • Funded by: Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)
  • Pay: ₹56,000 a month + 30% HRA (HRA only if you do not take hostel housing)
  • Duration: 11 months to start, extendable for 3 more years
  • Age limit: 30 years on the last day to apply
  • Apply by: 15 October 2026

The project is titled “AI-assisted 3D Vein Viewer”. It aims at a portable NIR stereovision device. The device will use AI-based depth mapping to guide safe and accurate IV access and jugular cannulation in patients whose veins are hard to find.

About the AI vein-imaging project at IIT Hyderabad

  • Build AI/ML and computer-vision tools for vein enhancement, segmentation, depth estimation and 3D reconstruction
  • Put together NIR cameras, LEDs, Raspberry Pi or other embedded boards, a display and real-time software
  • Calibrate cameras, test on phantoms and in the lab, analyse clinical data and refine the prototype
  • Write reports, papers and regulatory papers, and work with clinicians, engineers and industry partners

Why this role matters

Missed IV lines cause pain and delay care, most of all in children, older people and obese patients. This post puts an engineer with device experience on a medical tool from lab bench to clinical testing.

Eligibility

  • First-class postgraduate degree (integrated PG degrees count) in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related areas
  • At least 2 years of research or development work after the M.Tech, in instrumentation, device design, embedded systems, medical devices, mechatronics, optics or electronics
  • Hands-on prototype design, fabrication, testing and validation of optical, biomedical or electronic devices
  • Experience with cameras, LEDs, sensors, Raspberry Pi, displays, power modules and enclosures; CAD, 3D printing and calibration
  • Age: not more than 30 years on the last day to apply

Shortlisting uses your academic record, work experience and papers. Only shortlisted candidates get an email about the online interview. Meeting the criteria does not guarantee an interview. The PI may leave the posts vacant.

Pay and duration

  • ₹56,000 a month plus 30% HRA
  • HRA is paid only if you do not take a hostel room
  • 11 months to start, as soon as possible, and extendable for another 3 years on performance and funding

How to apply

Fill in the online application form by 15 October 2026. Incomplete forms are not evaluated. Read the IIT Hyderabad advertisement (PDF) first. For questions, the ad gives the email vsharma@phy.iith.ac.in (Prof. Vandana Sharma, Department of Physics).

How to prepare for this application

  • Bring a working device story: one prototype you built, what failed first, and how you fixed it.
  • Know near-infrared imaging: why NIR light shows veins, LED wavelength choice, and skin scattering.
  • Revise stereo vision: camera calibration, disparity, depth maps and the error you get at short range.
  • Show embedded skills: real-time image processing on a Raspberry Pi or similar board, and how you kept it fast.
  • Think about clinical use: safety, hygiene and how a nurse would hold the device. See more scientist jobs.
