Job Description

This molecular dynamics job in Bangalore is in Lam Research’s LIGHT (Lam India Global Hardware Team) modelling group. You will build atomistic models of gases and liquids moving and reacting in tiny channels. The work supports etch, deposition and clean processes used to make chips.

At a glance

  • Position: Modeling Technical Lead Engineer (full time, requisition 199124)
  • Where: Bengaluru, India; hybrid
  • Degree and experience: PhD with 1–2 years of industry experience, or a Master’s with 3–5 years
  • Core skills: Molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo, ML force fields, LAMMPS
  • Apply: open until filled (re-checked 5 November 2026)

What the modeling technical lead does

  • Design and build atomistic or phenomenological models of multi-species gas or liquid transport in confined channels
  • Add chemical reaction kinetics to simulate etch, deposition or clean processes
  • Work with continuum (CFD) modelers so boundary conditions pass cleanly into the atomistic models
  • Turn problems from Lam’s business units into a modelling plan, then deliver the results
  • Write up each study for the product development teams
  • Set up new modelling methods and publish them inside Lam as Best Known Methods

Why this role matters

Lam’s tools place material on wafers almost atom by atom, so the physics has to be modelled at that scale. This role suits a PhD in computational chemistry, physics or chemical engineering who wants industry work. It asks for only 1–2 years of industry experience after a PhD.

What Lam Research is looking for

  • Strong skills in molecular modelling, especially molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods
  • Python (or a similar language) for post-processing large data sets
  • Knowledge of building or applying ML-based and reactive force fields for new chemistries
  • Knowledge of AI/ML methods that speed up MD to reach larger length and time scales
  • Software such as LAMMPS, Quantum Espresso, Jaguar, Gaussian and Amber
  • PhD with 1–2 years of industry experience, or a Master’s with 3–5 years
  • Good communication and documentation skills for work with teams in the US, Europe and Asia

Nice to have

  • Density functional theory (DFT) calculations
  • CFD tools such as Fluent or Star-CCM+
  • Knowledge of wafer processing equipment and plasma physics
  • Strong presentation skills in English

Pay and location

The posting does not state pay. It is a hybrid role based in Bengaluru, working with engineering teams in the US, Europe and Asia.

How to apply

Apply through the official Lam Research job posting. Lam Research’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 5 November 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application

  • Prepare a 20-minute talk on your best MD or Monte Carlo study: the system, the force field, the checks and what it changed
  • Be ready to defend your choice of force field, and explain when you would move to a reactive or ML potential
  • Revise how to get transport properties from MD: diffusion coefficients, viscosity and confined-flow behaviour
  • Read the basics of plasma etch and atomic layer deposition, so you can link your methods to Lam's processes
  • Bring a short Python example of how you post-process large trajectory files
