IIT Guwahati has opened PhD admission for its December 2026 session, with classes starting in January 2027. All departments and many schools and centres are taking students. Apply online by 5:00 PM on 28 October 2026.

  • CSIR/UGC special scheme seats in Biosciences, Physics and Chemistry

Why this role matters

Mid-year IIT rounds are smaller than the July intake, so a strong applicant faces fewer rivals. IIT Guwahati admits across engineering, science, design and humanities in this round. It suits students who got a GATE score or a JRF this year and do not want to wait until next summer.

Eligibility

  • A 4- or 5-year bachelor’s or a master’s with CPI 6.0 on a 10-point scale or 60% marks, in the relevant discipline
  • Relaxed by 0.5 CPI or 5% for SC, ST and PwD candidates
  • Regular full-time candidates must qualify for an IIT Guwahati assistantship or hold a recognised government fellowship
  • Institute assistantship: a valid GATE/CEED score, or an IIT degree with CPI 8.0 or more, or UGC-CSIR-NET (Assistant Professorship) for arts subjects. MTech, MDes or MS(R) holders can also take the institute’s written test (IATMLA)
  • Outside fellowships accepted include NET-JRF (CSIR, UGC, DST, DBT, ICMR, ICAR), NBHM, DAE DGFS and UGC RGNF

The notice gives no number of seats and no stipend figure. It calls the January term “Monsoon Semester 2026”, which looks like a slip; the class date is 5 January 2027. INSPIRE awardees join as self-financed until their fellowship starts. Shortlisting may use GATE, NET or CEED scores and marks from Class 10 onward.

Pay and duration

  • Institute assistantship or outside fellowship; the notice gives no amount
  • Application fee: Rs 600; Rs 300 for women, transgender, SC, ST and PwD candidates
  • If you withdraw after joining but by 27 December 2026, Rs 1,000 is deducted

How to apply

Apply online on the IIT Guwahati admission portal. The form has three steps. Read the research areas PDF first and pick units that match your degree. Selection is by written test, interview or both.

How to prepare for this application

  • Read the areas PDF first. Each unit lists its topics; pick one that fits your degree and interests.
  • Check your funding route. A valid GATE or CEED score is the usual way to an institute assistantship.
  • Prepare for the written test. Many units test core subjects before the interview.
  • Know your project well. Interviewers ask about your master's or final-year project in depth.
  • Find possible advisers. Browse IIT Guwahati faculty on our Find a supervisor page.
