Why this role matters

IIT Delhi is one of India’s most sought-after places for a PhD. The January round is smaller than the July one, and many students miss it. If you have a valid GATE score now, this round lets you start research months earlier.

Eligibility

  • CGPA 6.0 on a 10-point scale or 60% marks for General, OBC and EWS; 5.5 or 55% for SC, ST and PwD
  • Full-time PhD and MS (Research) need a qualifying GATE or national exam. This is waived for some CFTI graduates
  • Foreign nationals cannot apply under this advertisement. A separate portal for foreign nationals is listed on the admissions page
  • Admission depends on seat availability in each unit

The advertisement is a scanned image. Some unit names differ slightly between the PhD and MS (Research) lists. Check the brochure, once it is posted, for exact eligibility by unit.

Pay and duration

  • Financial assistance for full-time students, as given in the information brochure; the advertisement gives no figure
  • SC, ST and PwD students are exempt from tuition fee
  • Application fee: Rs 200 (General, OBC, EWS); Rs 50 (SC, ST, PwD). Bank charges are extra

How to apply

Apply online on the IIT Delhi PG admission portal. Do not send a hard copy. Read the official advertisement and watch the admissions page for the information brochure.

How to prepare for this application

  • Wait for the brochure before you finalise. Unit-wise rules and test details will be in it.
  • Check the GATE rule for your unit. Full-time study needs GATE or a national exam unless you are exempt.
  • Pick units with care. Read each unit's research page, and the Optics and Photonics centre if that is your field.
  • Revise core subjects. IIT Delhi tests and interviews go deep into basics.
  • Know likely advisers. Browse IIT Delhi faculty on our Find a supervisor page and read their recent work.
