Job Description
This JRF in neuromorphic computing is a project-funded PhD post in the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Patna. The ANRF project develops energy-efficient optoelectronic molecular memristors for in-memory and neuromorphic computing.
At a glance
- Post: Junior Research Fellow, 1 post (project-funded PhD position)
- Where: Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Patna, Bihta, Patna
- Pay: ₹37,000 a month for two years, then ₹42,000 a month in the third year (consolidated)
- Duration: One year at first, extendable up to three years or the project end

The project is “Energy-efficient Optoelectronic Molecular Memristor for In-memory and Neuromorphic computation”. The Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) funds it. The investigators are Dr. Sanjay Kumar and Dr. Saurabh Kumar Pandey of the Department of Electrical Engineering. The advertisement is R&D/1531/EEO/630, dated 29 September 2026.
About the molecular memristor project
- Design, fabricate and test molecular memristor devices
- Study how light controls switching, for optoelectronic memory
- Characterise and model devices for in-memory and neuromorphic computing
- Work towards a PhD in Electrical Engineering
The advertisement lists preferred experience but no duties. The points above describe typical work on a project with this title. Ask the investigators for the exact tasks at interview.
Why this role matters
Moving data between memory and processor wastes most of the energy in AI hardware. Memristors can store and compute in the same place. This project builds light-controlled molecular memristors, a young field where a PhD can make a mark.
Eligibility
- Master’s route: a master’s in ECE, Chemical Engineering/Technology, Physics, Applied Physics, Solid State Physics/Electronic Materials/Materials, Nanotechnology, Materials Science/Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical, VLSI/Microelectronics or Instrumentation
- For the master’s route: first class (65% or 7.0 CPI) in M.Tech/ME/MS with GATE or NET, and first class (60% or 6.5 CPI) in B.Tech/BE, 12th and 10th
- B.Tech/BE route (Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Nanotechnology, Materials Science/Engineering or Engineering Physics): 75% or 8.0 CPI from institutes other than IITs/IISc, or 7.0 CPI from IITs/IISc, with a valid GATE score and 60% or 6.5 CPI in 12th and 10th
- Upper age limit: 28 years with a BE/B.Tech/M.Sc. as highest degree; 32 years with an ME/M.Tech/MS
Preference goes to experience in device design, fabrication, testing and packaging, memory devices, RRAM or artificial neurons, LEDs or photodetectors, photovoltaics, sensors, and modelling and characterisation. Age relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/women/PD candidates follows Government of India rules. The application form attached to the PDF carries a different project code and advertisement number (R&D/532/CRG/193). Use the form as given and quote the subject line below.
Pay and duration
- ₹37,000 a month for the first two years (consolidated)
- ₹42,000 a month in the third year, if performance is satisfactory
- One year at first, extendable up to three years or the project end, whichever is earlier
How to apply
