Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.

The work

The post sits inside the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility and is a strategic research leadership role across advanced computing systems, storage architectures and high-performance networking. The Advanced Technologies Section is an applied research and development organisation that works with system vendors, other national laboratories and the wider HPC community on where leadership computing goes next.

The named duties are leading and growing a multidisciplinary team of research scientists and postdocs on next-generation HPC systems architecture, with mentorship and career development; setting and executing a strategic research agenda with emphasis on hybrid classical-quantum systems, next-generation interconnects and future storage for leadership-scale workloads; and architecting and evaluating hybrid HPC-quantum systems.

This is a leadership post with a research programme attached, so the case you make is a direction for the next several years as much as a record.

What you need

  • A PhD in computer science, computer engineering or a related field, with substantial experience
  • A record in HPC systems architecture, storage or high-performance networking
  • Experience leading and mentoring researchers
  • Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications

Pay and conditions

ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.

How to apply

Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 16771. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. How to prepare for this application

  • This is a team-building post. Address mentorship and direction as well as your own publications.
  • Hybrid classical-quantum is the stated frontier. Say where you think that goes.
  • Quote the requisition ID, 16771. ORNL tracks applications by it.
  • Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
