Job Description

IIT Hyderabad has one Visvesvaraya PhD seat in Electrical Engineering. It is funded by MeitY under the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme, Phase II. The fellowship is Rs 46,250 a month at first, plus a yearly research grant. Apply through the online form by 23 October 2026.

At a glance

  • Programme: Full-time PhD, Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics and IT (Phase II), 2026-27
  • Seats: 1
  • Advertised by: Dr Gajendranath Chowdary, Associate Professor, Microelectronics and VLSI
  • Fellowship: Rs 46,250 a month (years 1-2), Rs 52,500 a month (years 3-5)
  • Apply by: 23 October 2026, online form
  • Where: IIT Hyderabad, Kandi, Sangareddy, Telangana

The seat appears under the department’s January 2027 cycle. The department’s regular January 2027 PhD round is not open yet; its dates are still marked as expected. Shortlisted candidates are emailed and called for an interview.

Research areas for the Visvesvaraya PhD at IIT Hyderabad

  • Electronics system design and manufacturing (ESDM)
  • Semiconductor technologies and embedded systems
  • Communication technologies, AI, and power electronics
  • IT and IT-enabled services, as the scheme defines them

Dr Chowdary’s group works on analog and mixed-signal circuit design, data converters and low-power circuits, as his faculty listing shows.

Why this role matters

India is building its own chip industry, and it needs designers trained to PhD level. The Visvesvaraya scheme pays more than the usual institute assistantship and adds a research grant and travel support. One seat means strong competition, so apply only if your background fits.

Eligibility

  • M.E., M.Tech., M.S. or equivalent in electrical, electronics, EEE, ECE, CS/CSE, IT, instrumentation or a close field
  • The page also allows “an equivalent qualification” in a related area with at least 70% or CGPA 7.0 and a valid GATE score
  • No age limit is stated
  • The selected candidate registers for the IIT Hyderabad PhD under institute rules

The eligibility sentence on the page is hard to parse. It is not clear whether the 70% and GATE condition applies to M.Tech. holders too, or only to the equivalent route. If in doubt, email the advertiser before you apply.

Pay and duration

  • Rs 46,250 a month in years 1 and 2; Rs 52,500 a month in years 3 to 5
  • Research contingency of Rs 1,20,000 a year
  • Rent or HRA reimbursement where admissible
  • Support for international conferences and lab visits abroad, under the scheme rules
  • No application fee is stated
