Job Description
This solid mechanics research scientist job in Pune is with Corning at its Baner site. You will build and test numerical models of impact, nonlinear deformation and fracture. Your results will guide Corning’s glass, ceramic and other materials products.
At a glance
- Position: Sr. Scientist – Solid Mechanics (requisition 77654); the posting describes it as Research Scientist – Applied Mechanics
- Where: Baner, Pune, Maharashtra, India
- Degree: PhD, Master’s or dual degree in mechanical, civil or aerospace engineering or materials science, from IITs, IISc, NITs or reputed foreign universities
- Experience: Freshers welcome; or 4–6 years after a Master’s or dual degree, or more than 1 year after a PhD
- Posted: 18 October 2026

What the solid mechanics scientist does
- Develop, validate and apply analytical and numerical models for dynamic impact, nonlinear FEA and fracture
- Solve applied mechanics problems in product performance and manufacturing processes
- Work in cross-functional teams on research and development problems for Corning businesses
- Build models with suitable methods and software, and extend tools where needed
- Present updates to teams around the world, including evening meetings in India time
- Write up findings in internal and external publications
Why this role matters
Cover glass on a phone must survive drops. Glass and ceramic parts in cars and labs must not crack. Simulation lets Corning test designs before making them. The posting welcomes fresh graduates and asks for publications, so it is a real research entry point in industry for mechanics PhDs.
What Corning is looking for

- Freshers, or 4–6 years after a Master’s or dual degree, or more than 1 year after a PhD
- Strong background in solid mechanics theory and FEA
- Experience with tools such as ABAQUS, LS-DYNA, ANSYS Mechanical, MATLAB or Tecplot
- Experience modelling dynamic impact and material nonlinearity
- Good communication, and the ability to turn real problems into modelling goals
Nice to have
- Experimental work, directly or with collaborators
- C/C++, Unix shell or Python
Pay and location
The posting does not state pay. The role is based at Corning’s Baner site in Pune.
How to apply

How to prepare for this application
- Prepare one FEA project end to end: the physics, mesh and material model, validation and what you learned
- Revise fracture mechanics: stress intensity factors, energy release rate and crack growth in brittle materials
- Be ready to explain explicit and implicit solvers, and when you use LS-DYNA over ABAQUS/Standard
- Think about how you would model a drop test of a cover glass and check it against experiments
- Practise explaining a model result to a non-specialist in two minutes
