Job Description

The Paul Scherrer Institute has a PhD position in materials science on 3D-printed light alloys. You will use neutron imaging to map the crystal texture inside printed metal parts. Then you will link it to how the parts behave. Apply online by 5 November 2026.

At a glance

  • Position: PhD Student, 100%, 1 post (index no. 3304-30366)
  • Group: Applied Materials Group, Laboratory for Neutron Scattering and Imaging
  • Where: PSI, Villigen, Switzerland
  • Contact: Dr Florencia Malamud
  • Apply: 5 November 2026

What the PSI materials science PhD involves

  • Study texture in additively manufactured light alloys with wavelength-resolved neutron imaging
  • Link that texture to the mechanical properties of the parts
  • Develop and apply a texture tomography method that rebuilds the 3D crystal texture of a part
  • Run neutron imaging and diffraction experiments
  • Check the results with electron microscopy and mechanical tests
  • Publish the work and present it at conferences

Why this role matters

Printed metal parts are now flying in aircraft and cars. Their grain texture decides how strong they are, and it is hard to see inside a finished part. Neutrons can do it. You will work at one of the few places with its own neutron source.

What PSI is looking for

  • A master’s degree in materials science, materials physics, mechanical engineering, applied maths or a related field
  • Interest in experimental work, high motivation and very good communication skills
  • Excellent English

Nice to have

  • Programming, for example Python, and an interest in numerical methods, data analysis or inverse problems
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing
  • Experience with neutron or X-ray diffraction and imaging

Pay and location

The ad does not state pay, the length of the PhD, a start date or the university that will award the degree. Ask the contact about these before you apply. The ad sets no nationality or permit limit.

How to apply

Apply through the official PSI page. The closing date is 5 November 2026. Use the “Apply online now” link. Include a list of publications and the addresses of referees, and quote index no. 3304-30366.

How to prepare for this application

  • Read recent papers on Bragg-edge neutron imaging and texture
  • Revise crystallographic texture: pole figures and orientation distribution functions
  • Show any Python code you wrote for image or diffraction data
  • Mention any work with printed metals, even a course project
  • Ask which university will award the degree and how long the post runs

About the Paul Scherrer Institute

PSI is Switzerland's largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences. It is part of the ETH Domain. It runs large facilities such as the SINQ neutron source and the Swiss Light Source at Villigen in Aargau.
