About the work

The CRUK Cambridge Institute is a department of the University of Cambridge, core funded by Cancer Research UK. This role is embedded in the Institute’s Markowetz research group and leads critical software engineering research projects supporting the Institute’s AI research strategy, as part of the wider cross-institutional CRUK AI Alliance.

The Alliance links all four CRUK institutes and their partners through shared infrastructure, data and expertise. It aims to build foundation models spanning genotype, molecular regulatory networks and tumour-organ interactions, taking account of age, sex and environmental exposure. Those models are meant to let federated teams study disease processes that cannot be observed directly, such as pre-cancerous lesions.

This is an unusual post: a senior academic title for someone whose craft is software.

What you need

  • A strong software engineering background, with the depth to lead research software projects
  • Interest in machine learning infrastructure and federated data
  • Read the official advertisement for the full person specification

Pay

The advertised range is £47,389 to £59,966 a year. This is a fixed-term post.

How to prepare for this application

  • Show engineering as well as scripts. Architecture, testing and maintainability are what this post is for.
  • Federated infrastructure across four institutes is the context. Experience with multi-site data counts.
  • Quote the reference, SW51275. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
  • Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
