Application deadline closed.

Job Description

A PhD position is open in the Quantum Algorithms group (led by Prof. Dr. Kottmann) at the University of Augsburg’s Institute of Computer Science.

starting as soon as practicable, within the framework of the regular working hours in an employment connection, initially restricted to one year. Three more years of additional employment are planned. If job sharing guarantees the completion of the tasks on a full-time basis, this position might be varied as part-time employment.

With several applications, including in chemistry and material science, quantum computing is at the nexus of computer science and physics. The hybrid algorithmic techniques are the main area of interest for the quantum algorithms research team. One illustration is the division of eigenvalue problems with physical motivation into one- and many-body parts that can be solved on classical and quantum technology. The group also creates abstraction concepts and automatized software solutions in this context.

We offer:

  • Participation in international research projects
  • The opportunity to obtain a PhD in computer science — the first year of the contract will be devoted to finding a suitable topic tailored to your interests and skills
  • Opportunities to publish in well-respected international research journals
  • Opportunities to participate in international conferences

Your profile:

  • Completed Master’s degree in computer science or a related subject (physics, mathematics, or other degrees in science with a suitable focus – like theoretical chemistry).
  • Required qualifications must be demonstrated with the application materials.
  • Active contribution to the teaching duties of the group (5-course hours)
  • Basic programming skills (e.g. python, c++, Julia) or the commitment to develop them
  • Interest in the clear and structured presentation of scientific results
