About the work
The studentships sit in the FIBE3 CDT, the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Unlocking Net Zero, and are run in collaboration with industry. The structure is 1+3: a one-year MRes followed by a three-year PhD.
Projects fall under four themes:
- Current and disruptive technologies
- Circularity and whole life approach
- AI-driven digitalisation and data
- Risk-based systems thinking and connectivity
Infrastructure is where net zero either happens or does not: concrete, steel, buildings and transport networks account for a large share of emissions, and most of the stock that will exist in 2050 is already built.
What you need
- A strong degree in engineering, physical sciences, computer science or a related field
- Funding note: fully funded studentships covering fees and maintenance are available for eligible home students, and for a limited number of international students. Check your eligibility early
- Technical enquiries go to Professor Abir Al-Tabbaa; general enquiries to the CDT course administrator, both named in the advertisement
Pay
The studentship is advertised as fully funded. The advertisement gives no figure, so confirm the stipend and fee cover with the department before you accept.

How to prepare for this application
- International places are limited but real. The advert says a limited number are available, so ask early before assuming you are excluded.
- It is a 1+3 programme. You do an MRes first, which suits someone whose degree is in an adjacent field.
- Industry partners shape the projects. Say which of the four themes you want and why.
- Quote the reference, NM51098. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
- Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
