IIT Kanpur keeps a standing rolling advertisement for faculty positions at IIT Kanpur, open at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor levels. There is no closing date. Applications go through the institute’s online portal and are reviewed by the department concerned.

IIT Kanpur publishes department-wise vacancies and areas of specialisation on a separate page, linked from the advertisement. Several departments also teach in the interdisciplinary programmes in Photonics Science and Engineering and in Materials Science, but appointments are always made in a department.
How selection works
- A group of faculty in your area reviews your application and recommends whether you are suitable
- Recommended candidates are invited to give a seminar
- The institute then asks your referees for letters
- The Department Faculty Advisory Committee shortlists candidates, who are presented to the Institute Faculty Advisory Committee and interviewed
Eligibility
- All posts: a Ph.D. with first class or equivalent in the preceding degree, and a very good academic record in all degrees
- Assistant Professor: the Ph.D. requirement above. A fresh Ph.D. is appointed on contract for the first three years and may be regularised after that
- Associate Professor: six years of teaching, research or industrial experience, including at least three as Assistant Professor or equivalent
- Professor: ten years of experience, including at least four as Associate Professor
- Candidates with outstanding credentials may have minimum qualification or experience rules relaxed; people not selected at a higher level may be considered at a lower one
Reservation follows the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers’ Cadre) Act, 2019, and category certificates must be attached. You may apply to more than one department by repeating the online application. Government employees need a No Objection Certificate at interview.
Pay and duration
- Assistant Professor Grade I: Pay Level 12, basic pay Rs 1,01,500 to 1,67,400; Grade II (contract) is paid at Levels 10 and 11, as set out on the advertisement page
- Associate Professor: Pay Level 13A2; Professor: Pay Level 14A
- A top-up salary of Rs 25,000 a month for the first three years for newly joined faculty, then eligibility for the Young Faculty Fellowship (for faculty up to 40)
- A research initiation grant, central government allowances, and reimbursement of international joining travel up to Rs 1,50,000
