Job Description
The Raman Research Institute is running a major faculty recruitment drive, with several regular posts of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor in astronomy and astrophysics, light and matter physics (which includes quantum optics and atomic physics), soft condensed matter and theoretical physics. Candidates with other research interests that broaden the institute are also welcome. Applications close on 31 December 2026.

RRI faculty mainly do independent research in fundamental science. The institute encourages collaboration in India and abroad, supervision of PhD and visiting students, proposals for new experiments and laboratories, and participation in large international collaborations.

Eligibility
- Professor: PhD in physics or a related field with at least nine years of postdoctoral experience; upper age 50
- Associate Professor: PhD with at least six years of postdoctoral experience; upper age 45
- Assistant Professor: PhD with at least three years of postdoctoral experience; upper age 40 (entry level at RRI)
- Desirable: academy fellowships or national and international awards for senior posts; independent research and mentoring for Assistant Professor
The terms say candidates must be citizens of India, but the same page also says that for non-citizens, including OCI holders, Government of India clearances must be in place before an offer. Non-citizens should confirm their eligibility with RRI before applying. Meeting the minimums does not guarantee a shortlist, and candidates are encouraged to contact members of their preferred group.
Pay and duration
- Pay Levels 12, 13 and 13A of the 7th CPC; the salary depends on experience and current status
- Regular appointments with one year of probation, under the New Pension Scheme
- Relocation assistance as per norms; interview travel within India reimbursed
