Job Description
This image sensor scientist job in KLA’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer leads research on CCD and CMOS image sensors and camera electronics for the company’s semiconductor inspection roadmap, from prototype sensors to low-noise readout boards, in Milpitas, California.
At a glance
- Position: Image Sensor and Camera Electronics Scientist, CTO Office (full time, requisition 2633741)
- Where: Milpitas, California, USA
- Pay: Base pay $186,200 to $273,067 a year
- Experience: A doctorate with at least 5 years of experience
- Apply: open until filled (re-checked 24 October 2026)
What the image sensor scientist does
- Lead R&D projects on image sensor and camera electronics technology for KLA’s product roadmap
- Work with strategic vendors on next-generation image sensors
- Propose and design prototype sensors and test structures
- Build test set-ups for electrical and optical characterisation, including high-speed, low-noise readout and data-acquisition PCBs
- Design and run experiments, analyse data and present clear conclusions
Why this role matters
Inspection tools are only as sensitive and fast as the sensors that record the light. As defects shrink, the sensor’s noise, speed and response at short wavelengths become limits, and KLA’s CTO office works years ahead of products to remove them. This role shapes the detectors inside future tools.
What KLA is looking for
- A doctorate and at least 5 years of experience
- Experience with CCD or CMOS image sensors and camera systems
- Hands-on lab work building and running test set-ups for sensor and camera characterisation
- Design and simulation of analogue and digital circuits for high-speed, low-noise readout PCBs
- Software for test automation and data analysis
Nice to have
- Solid-state physics, optics and light–matter interaction
- Digital image processing
- FPGA design and firmware programming
Pay and location
The posting gives a base pay range of $186,200 to $273,067 a year for Milpitas. KLA’s package may also include performance incentives, medical and dental cover, a 401(k) with company match and an employee stock purchase plan.
How to apply
Apply through the official KLA job posting. KLA’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 24 October 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application
- Prepare a characterisation study you led: noise sources, quantum efficiency, linearity and how you measured each
- Be ready to walk through a low-noise readout chain on paper, from pixel to ADC, and where noise enters
- Bring an example of test automation you wrote and what it saved
- Know the trade-offs between CCD, CMOS and time-delay-integration sensors for fast, sensitive imaging
- Read about how optical wafer inspection works so you can connect sensor specifications to defect sensitivity
