Job Description
This JRF in fibre optics at CSIR-CGCRI Kolkata is one Junior Research Fellow post in the institute’s Fibre Optics and Photonics Division, on a project to develop speciality fibre and related components for a 2 kW narrow-linewidth fibre laser, sponsored by the DRDO Industry Academia Centre of Excellence at IIT Delhi (Advt. No. 44/2627/FOPD/GAP-0188/AD, post code 44/2627/01).
At a glance
- Position: Junior Research Fellow (01 post)
- Where: CSIR-CGCRI, Jadavpur, Kolkata
- Pay: Rs 37,000 a month plus HRA as permissible, for NET/GATE-qualified candidates
- Duration: One year at first, extendable until the project ends
- Apply by: 30 September 2026, by email
The project, GAP-0188, is titled “Specialty Fiber and related Components for 2 Kw Narrow Linewidth Fibre Laser (SFCNLFL)”. The post is open to Indian citizens, and the interview is held in hybrid mode, in person or online.
Why this role matters
High-power, narrow-linewidth fibre lasers are hard to build because the fibre itself becomes the limit: at kilowatt power, unwanted nonlinear effects and heat set in unless the core, the doping and the glass are designed for it. CGCRI is one of very few places in India that makes its own speciality preforms and fibre, so a JRF here learns the glass-and-fabrication end of laser development, which is scarcer than laser-system experience.
The advertisement states the stipend only for NET/GATE or equivalently qualified candidates.
What the fibre optics JRF will work on
- Speciality optical fibre and related components for a 2 kW narrow-linewidth fibre laser
- The glass-science and fibre-fabrication side of the work: optical preforms, fibre drawing and rare-earth-doped materials, which the advertisement names as the preferred background
The advertisement gives the project title and the preferred experience rather than a list of duties.
Eligibility
- M.Sc. in Chemistry (Physical or Inorganic) or Nanoscience with at least 55% marks or equivalent CGPA/DGPA
- Or B.E./B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering or Material Science with at least first class
- CSIR-UGC NET or GATE qualification, or a national-level examination held by central government departments such as DST or DBT, for the stated stipend
- Preferred: a first-class degree and research experience in glass science, speciality optical preform or fibre fabrication, and rare-earth-doped materials
- Age limit: 30 years on the date of interview
The advertisement asks for the typed application form (not hand-written) in the institute’s prescribed format, with self-attested soft copies of every supporting document. Candidates whose results are awaited are not eligible. Anyone already working on a project at CGCRI or another institute must attach a no-objection certificate from their current project leader. If your university awards a CGPA, you must convert it to a percentage using your university’s own rule and attach a self-attested copy of that rule. The upper age limit is relaxed by up to 5 years for SC, ST, physically handicapped and female candidates, and by 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates. Meeting the minimum qualification does not guarantee a call for interview, and the number of posts may change.
Pay and duration
- Rs 37,000 a month plus HRA as permissible
- Initially one year, extendable until the project is completed, subject to satisfactory performance
- One post
How to apply
Email a soft copy of the filled-in CGCRI application form for project staff to recruitment.cgcri@csir.res.in, with self-attested soft copies of your certificates, mark sheets and any reprints. A separate application is needed for each post code. Bring the originals and self-attested copies of all documents, and your project thesis if you have one, to the interview, and report at least one hour before the interview time: the advertisement says late arrivals will not be allowed into the institute. Shortlisted candidates are told the interview date and time; if you want to attend online, say so in your application.
Key dates
- Last date for applications by email: 30 September 2026
- Interview date: to be communicated to shortlisted candidates (hybrid mode)

Hiring institution: CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI)
Official advertisement: www.cgcri.res.in
How to prepare for this application
- Fill in the prescribed form on a computer, not by hand; CGCRI says incomplete or non-format applications are rejected outright
- Convert any CGPA to a percentage using your own university's rule, and attach that rule as a self-attested soft copy, as the advertisement requires
- Attach your NET or GATE score card; the advertised stipend applies to NET/GATE or equivalently qualified candidates
- If you are a chemistry graduate, prepare to explain glass formation, refractive-index control by dopants, and how rare-earth ions such as ytterbium are incorporated into silica
- Read one or two recent papers on high-power fibre lasers and be able to name the effects (stimulated Brillouin scattering, mode instability, photodarkening) that the fibre design must suppress
About CSIR-CGCRI
The Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute in Jadavpur, Kolkata, is a laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) working on glass, ceramics and related materials. Its Fibre Optics and Photonics Division makes speciality optical fibres in-house, from preform fabrication and drawing through to fibre lasers, fibre gratings and fibre-optic sensors, which is why several of the institute's project posts sit in photonics rather than in ceramics.
