Job Description
This plasma physics simulation job in Pune is with Eaton’s global Arc Management and Simulation Centre of Excellence. You will model and test the electric arcs that form inside circuit breakers and switchgear. Your models will guide how Eaton designs its power distribution products.
At a glance
- Position: Lead Engineer, Arc Management and Simulation (full time, requisition 74536)
- Where: Hadapsar, Pune, Maharashtra, India
- Degree: PhD or Master’s in plasma physics, electrical, mechanical or computational engineering, applied physics or a related field
- Experience: 7–10 years in plasma or arc physics, experiments, and modelling and simulation
- Posted: 30 September 2026
- Apply: open until filled (re-checked 12 November 2026)
What the arc simulation lead does
- Set and drive the technology roadmap for arc management and simulation
- Develop simulation methods for arc initiation, motion, cooling and interruption, dielectric recovery, contact erosion, gas flow and plasma-material interaction
- Lead plasma experiments, diagnostics and characterisation to produce data for model validation
- Build coupled multiphysics plasma (MHD) models with fluid flow, heat transfer, electromagnetics and radiation
- Verify, calibrate and validate models against test data, and study their uncertainty
- Use the models on product programmes to optimise arc chambers, flow paths, materials and contacts
- Work with universities and research institutes, and mentor younger engineers
Why this role matters
When a breaker opens under load, an arc forms and must be put out in milliseconds. Testing every design at full power is slow and costly. Good arc models let engineers test ideas on a computer first. This role also asks for university collaborations and AI/ML-enabled simulation, so it suits a plasma physicist who wants applied research in industry.
What Eaton is looking for
- PhD or Master’s in plasma physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, computational engineering or a related field
- 7–10 years of industry or research experience in plasma physics, arc physics, experiments, and modelling and simulation
- Strong depth in switching arcs, transport phenomena, arc interruption and plasma-material interaction
- Hands-on plasma or arc experiments, diagnostics, test planning and validation
- CFD, FEM, heat transfer, electromagnetics, radiation, MHD and coupled multiphysics simulation
- ANSYS, COMSOL, OpenFOAM or similar tools, and coding in C/C++, Python/Perl or Fortran 90
Nice to have
- Experience with circuit breakers, switchgear or other electrical products
Pay and location
The posting does not state pay. The role is based at Eaton’s Hadapsar site in Pune.
How to apply
Apply through the official Eaton job posting. Eaton’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 12 November 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application
- Prepare a short talk on one arc or plasma model you built: the physics you kept, the coupling, and how you validated it
- Revise the physics of arc interruption: current zero, dielectric recovery and the role of gas flow and cooling
- Be ready to explain how you handle radiation transport and material ablation in an MHD model
- Bring an example of a diagnostic you used, such as high-speed imaging or spectroscopy, and what it told you
- Think about how you would show business value: fewer test shots, shorter design cycles, or better first-pass results
