The work
You would help set the engineering culture for frontier machine learning research in drug discovery, bringing engineering rigour to the ML effort so research matures into clinical and product impact. The advert calls it a high-agency role designed for a builder who wants to operate as a founding member of a new functional group.
Working with biology-fluent ML researchers and data engineers, the work spans three areas. First, foundational capability: turning new ideas and prototype models, among them diffusion networks, vision transformers and DNA sequence models, into highly optimised and scalable JAX or PyTorch code on accelerators, and going deep into architectures to optimise training and inference, including model parallelism. Second, research engineering: spotting the engineering gaps that block new research, and architecting solutions for asynchronous execution, hardware orchestration and high-throughput data pipelines, plus foundational libraries that hold the line on software rigour. Third, force multiplication: evaluation frameworks, benchmarks and scientific workflow tools that let the whole team test promising ideas quickly.
What you need
- A strong intellectual curiosity about life sciences. No biology background is required
- A BS or MS with 7 or more years of relevant experience, or a PhD with 4 or more years
- Expertise in Python and in JAX or PyTorch
- A track record of building, training or optimising advanced ML architectures such as transformers, diffusion networks or graph neural networks, from concept to publication or production
- Willingness to work onsite at least four days a week
- Nice to have: cloud and container experience (AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, Docker) and an advanced degree in computer science
About the employer
Calico Life Sciences is an Alphabet-founded research and development company. Its mission is to understand the biology that controls human ageing and to use that knowledge to help people live longer, healthier lives. How to apply
Apply through the Calico Life Sciences job page. No closing date is given, so apply early. Check the visa position before you start. US research employers differ on whether they sponsor, and some adverts say outright that they will not.

How to prepare for this application
- No biology needed. The advert says so outright, which makes this one of the rare high-paying bio research posts open to pure ML engineers.
- Show scale. Model parallelism, accelerator optimisation and high-throughput pipelines are all named.
- Founding-member framing. Describe a time you set engineering standards for a team.
- Check sponsorship before you invest time. It is the biggest single filter on US research applications from overseas.
