The work
You would join a research group asking how genome sequence determines regulatory function, and how the breakdown of those programmes drives ageing. The group develops sequence-based deep learning models that predict gene expression, chromatin accessibility and other functional readouts directly from DNA, then uses those models to interpret human genetic variation, map causal regulatory mechanisms and pick out promising points for intervention.
The advert names the lineage of this work, which tells you a lot about the group: Avsec et al., “Effective gene expression prediction from sequence by integrating long-range interactions” (Nature Methods, 2021); Yuan and Kelley on scBasset for single-cell ATAC-seq (Nature Methods, 2022); and Linder, Srivastava, Yuan, Agarwal and Kelley on predicting RNA-seq coverage from DNA sequence (Nature Genetics, 2025).
The job is to design and train deep learning models for biological sequence analysis, with the emphasis on gene regulation, single-cell genomics and variant interpretation; to partner with experimental scientists so that model predictions turn into validation experiments and real biological insight; and to publish through papers, open-source software and public-facing tools.
What you need
- A PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science or a related field, with 0 to 5 years of further training for the Scientist level and 5 or more years for the Senior level, and a strong publication record
- Deep machine learning expertise, grounded in algorithms, data structures and statistics
- Substantive knowledge of molecular biology and genetics, and familiarity with genomic data types and public data resources
- Hands-on experience analysing genomics sequencing data, ideally including single-cell assays
- Fluency with modern AI-assisted development, and willingness to work onsite at least four days a week
About the employer
Calico Life Sciences is an Alphabet-founded research and development company. Its mission is to understand the biology that controls human ageing and to use that knowledge to help people live longer, healthier lives. It runs technology labs, curiosity-driven discovery science, and a drug-development pipeline with academic and industry partners.
How to apply
Apply through the Calico Life Sciences job page. No closing date is given, so apply early. Check the visa position before you start. US research employers differ on whether they sponsor, and some adverts say outright that they will not.

How to prepare for this application
- Read the three named papers. Enformer, scBasset and the RNA-seq coverage model are the group's own work.
- Both halves are tested. You need the deep learning and enough molecular biology to talk to bench scientists.
- Four days onsite is stated. Plan for that before you apply.
- Check sponsorship before you invest time. It is the biggest single filter on US research applications from overseas.
