Job Description

This materials scientist job in Gurugram is an R&D post in Siemens Energy’s Grid Technologies division. You will test and characterise metals and alloys used in grid equipment. You will study how they fail and suggest better material choices.

At a glance

  • Position: Material Scientist / Metallurgy & Materials Characterization Engineer (permanent, job ID 524820)
  • Where: Gurugram, Haryana, India (office or site only)
  • Employer: Siemens Energy India Limited, Research & Development
  • Degree: Materials science, metallurgy, chemistry, physics or a similar field
  • Level: Experienced professional
  • Posted: 7 October 2026
  • Apply: open until filled (re-checked 19 November 2026)

What the materials scientist does

  • Characterise metals and alloys under mechanical, thermal, electrical and environmental stress
  • Analyse chemical composition, microstructure and material properties
  • Carry out failure analysis and study corrosion, wear and fatigue
  • Design and run material testing and qualification programmes
  • Support material substitution, supplier evaluation and lower-carbon material choices
  • Work with global R&D teams, suppliers and outside labs

Why this role matters

Switchgear, transformers and HVDC equipment must work for decades under heat, current and weather. The metals inside them decide how long they last. This role finds out why parts fail and which materials can replace them. The posting also welcomes CALPHAD, multiphysics and AI-based materials discovery, so it suits a metallurgist with a modelling side.

What Siemens Energy is looking for

  • Degree in materials science, metallurgy, chemistry, physics or a similar field
  • Industry experience with metals and alloys: characterisation, failure analysis and qualification
  • Hands-on use of SEM/EDS, XRD, XRF, ICP, metallography, mechanical testing and thermal analysis
  • Exposure to thermodynamic and kinetic modelling, including CALPHAD, for phase stability and alloy design
  • Experience with multiphysics simulation of coupled thermal, mechanical, electrical and magnetic loads
  • Strong analysis and communication skills, and willingness to travel up to 30% of the time

Nice to have

  • AI/ML-assisted materials discovery or materials informatics

Pay and location

The posting does not state pay. The role is permanent and based in Gurugram, with travel of up to 30%.

How to prepare for this application

  • Prepare one failure analysis case from start to finish: the part, the tests, the root cause and the fix
  • Revise corrosion, wear and fatigue mechanisms in copper, aluminium and steel alloys
  • Be ready to explain how you would use CALPHAD to screen a substitute alloy
  • Bring an example of a qualification plan you designed and the standards behind it
  • Read about high-voltage switchgear and transformers so you know where these metals sit
