Job Description

Lumentum’s Slovenian company, Lumentum d.o.o. – Optična vlakna, is looking for an early-career optical engineer or applied physicist to help develop a new laser-based manufacturing technology for high-precision optical fibre assemblies. The work combines laser optics, how laser light interacts with glass, modelling, software and hands-on experiments: designing and aligning free-space setups, controlling beam and process parameters, building models, and moving the process from the lab into production. Exceptional graduates are welcome.

At a glance

  • Role: Optical Engineer / Applied Physicist (req. 20261153)
  • Location: Škofljica, Slovenia
  • Posted: 4 September 2026
  • Level: Graduate or early career
  • Apply: open until filled (re-checked 13 October 2026)

About the laser process role

  • Develop and validate laser-based processes for glass and optical fibre assemblies
  • Design, build, align and characterise free-space optical setups
  • Control focus, spot size, beam shape, power density, timing and stability
  • Plan experiments that reduce the main development risks
  • Build analytical or numerical models and compare them with measurements
  • Define measurement methods and process windows, and support transfer to manufacturing

What the job is like

The posting calls this genuine development work: the process, models and equipment requirements will be shaped by analysis and experiment, working alongside experienced engineers with direct access to lab equipment and manufacturing feedback, and taking more ownership of the technology over time.

What Lumentum is looking for

  • Strong foundations in optics, physics or engineering applied to real hardware
  • Hands-on experience with optical setups, lasers or measurement systems
  • Sensible estimation, good experiment design and judgement about results
  • Programming in Python, MATLAB, C++, C# or similar
  • Clear communication across disciplines

Nice to have

  • Laser beam characterisation, optical design or optical fibres
  • Glass processing, thermal or multiphysics modelling
  • Instrument control or lab automation

Pay and location

Lumentum’s posting does not give a figure; it mentions a competitive package with base salary, performance bonus, equity and benefits. The role is in Škofljica, near Ljubljana.

How to apply

Apply through the official Lumentum job posting. Lumentum’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 13 October 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application

  • Include a work example: the posting asks for one example of how you tackled a hard technical problem, what you did, the physics behind it and how you checked it.
  • Student work counts: lab projects, internships, competitions and personal projects are all accepted as experience.
  • Laser-glass interaction: read up on ultrafast and CO2 laser processing of glass.
  • Links welcome: attach code, reports, photos or data.
