Job Description
Photonic is looking for an Optical Engineer, ideal for a recent PhD graduate or postdoc, to help design and engineer optical subsystems for its quantum computing roadmap. You will help move designs from research prototypes to reliable, manufacturable solutions: precision optical sources, single-photon fibre networks and in-system telemetry in the O-band, the telecom wavelength band where Photonic’s qubits emit. It is a good bridge from academic quantum optics into product engineering.

What you will do
- Contribute to optical design and validation flows: tools, modelling approaches and test methods
- Help specify and model optical link architectures
- Develop fibre-based electro-optical assemblies and subsystems
- Characterise, test and analyse optical performance against requirements, tracking stability, reliability, noise and robustness
- Contribute to telemetry and control for monitoring and optimising optical parameters, and evaluate new component technologies
What Photonic is looking for
- A PhD in optics, engineering, engineering physics or a closely related field (recent graduates and postdocs encouraged)
- A strong foundation in fibre-based optical systems (C- or O-band preferred)
- Experience with optical modelling, simulation and data-analysis tools
- Hands-on use of optical test instruments and lab measurement techniques
- Python or similar for analysis and automation, and experience turning research ideas into working prototypes
Nice to have
- Experience moving research systems towards manufacturable products
Pay and location
Photonic gives a base salary range of CA$94,200–130,000 for new hires across Canadian locations; actual pay depends on qualifications and experience, and full-time roles are eligible for equity and benefits.
